Does anyone have any information as to why a 2007 M5040 with hydraulic shuttle will rock back and forth when in neutral, even with the foot clutch pedal fully depressed. The tractor has only 250 hours on it (but is out of warranty) and uses SUDT. Any suggestions as to what to check or some adjustment to be made? Due to long distance to nearest dealer can't really take it in for them to look at.

There was recently another post about the same thing, I think it was an 8540 or a 9540. I didn't follow it, but it's here somewhere. Try a search. I think it was worse when the machine was cold, got better when warmed up.

Is there fluid in the tires?

Did a search before I posted, and only found prophet455's posting regarding his 7040 doing the same rocking when cold. No resolution was posted in his thread.

Yes there is fluid in the rear tires.

Further experimentation indicates the rocking is reduced in amplitude, but not eliminated, if the 4 speed gear shifter is placed in the neutral position.

I just went through a shuttle shift problem, this is one symptom I have not heard of with the shuttle shift.
My bet is tire slosh, does it stop when you step on the brakes ?

My experience so far is as folows: The tractor has sat over night outside on a level concrete pad. I start the tractor with hydraulic shuttle shifter in neutral, brakes off, 4 speed shifter in first gear. Rocking begins approximately 30 seconds after start up. The tractor remains in hydraulic shuttle neutral throughout the entire period. The amplitude of the rocking increases until the tractor is physically moving (while still in neutral) forward, then backward about 60 times a minute approximately 2 inches in each direction. The rocking amplitude is partially reduced by putting the 4 speed shifter into neutral, and the rocking can be totally eliminated by placing the high/ low
(rabbit/turtle) selector in the middle of its range of travel (where neither high or low is selected).

I don't think the tires can slosh around at dead stop with no tire motion for the previous 12 hours.

Your hydraulic and or transmission oil is surging creating a lot of fluid energy within the tractor, and it happens when some rubber tired machinery is at low idle a lot especially f there is an accumulator charging and discharging system pressure at low idle.

The more oil is diverted to work the less oil is surging through the main oil hoses and return as well as the transmission oil control valves.

You also may have a defective sticking relief valve the transmission circuit or it needs to be readjusted.

The only other option I can think of is a plugged transmission filter that is bypassing with the pressure build up if the filter has a spring released oil path if it is plugged.

Its a normal annoyance in some machinery and could be canceled out with a full rack of suit case weights most likely IF it has an accumulator in a steering or brake circuit.

Did you do the last service?
At this point I think I would run a hydraulic load test.

I remember some of the earlier M's with the Hydraulic Shuttle had cable adjustment problems from the factory that showed up at low hours. Most of those I read about were more of the nature of creep, failure to go into neutral symptoms. It would almost have to involve both the direction and the clutch cable I would think to cause a symptom like yours. I'll look and see what the service manual says.

No idea, but it sounds like a fascinating problem. I guess the place I'd start is to figure out whether the rocking is being caused by some out of balance that is growing in amplitude....or if it is some feature of the transmission itself where it tends to drive in one direction for a moment and then quits or reverses.

Changing the resistance to motion...adding damping....like lowering some implement to the floor should change things if it is some sort of imbalance that is driving the oscillation.
But if it is some feature of the transmission drive itself that is oscillating - like a valve - well, since it has a hydraulic shuttle, I don't know just what levers would have to be put into neutral to eliminate all the ways of slightly powering the tranny.

It's not all M series, though. I normally warm up my M59 at idle for awhile before using it and would have noticed it. The M59 TLB is a different tranny with being hydrostatic with L,M,H ranges plus a high/low in each range (rabbit & turtle). The latter is a toggle on a stalk on the steering column.
good luck, rScotty
