i am thinking about buying a used m&w 5506 hay roller and i don't know much about this brand. it is a 1998 open chamber and cosmetically in great shape. it has the in cab roll monitor and hyd. pick-up. if anybody has any experience with this make or model and knows what to look for please let me know. i can get it for $4000. the owner told me he baled 1000 rolls a year and that he did all the maint. on it. thanks in advance.

I can't tell you a lot about them, but the price you quoted is in the range that I have seen used ones advertised for. Look over the pickup, drive chains, sprockets, and roller chain very well. The monitor, if it has a bale counter, should give you the total number of bales the baler has made. They do not have the reputation for longevity that most other brands have, from what I understand. The soft core bale made in this style baler must be made to a full or very near full bale to get a good shell on the bale. If it does not have a good shell they are difficult to move and do not store outside well. I used to own a OMC(bought out by Gehl) soft core baler. The soft core style can get away with baling hay a little wetter than a hard core bale.

thank you all for the response and the info! i checked the pickup chains and they all look good and very well greased. the surface where the rollers on the bale chains roll have a 1/8 to 1/4 inch wear grove in them. just wondering if that is acceptable or not?
