Noob here,
I am looking for a tractor for 150 forested ac in the mountains. It is raw land with old logging roads that I will be clearing for a driveway and trails. There will be about 5 ac that will get cleared also. That sounds like a lot lot of loader, grapple, scrapper, box blade work with some bush hogging at the end.
I have found a nice M5040 4x4 shuttle with about 1000 hours or the TYM 494. I am an old school fan of no computers and it sounds like the TYM has a mechanical Kukje engine with an add on DPF. They are very similar in specs. Is a 12 yr old Kubota expected to have less breakage than a new TYM? Hoses, clutches etc. Thanks for your opinions and any 494 owners please let me know what you think.

I would go with the Kubota all day long.

Thanks. Any reasons why? I would too if they were both new, but there is a big age and hour difference for the same money.

A Honda with 180,000 miles still has 150,000 miles left to go before it's worn out. A Yugo with 80,000 miles might only have 50,000 miles left to go before you send it to the salvage yard.

Just an opinion.

Welcome to TBN!

Kubota builds a excellent machine with a proven track record. That being said, I would not be scared of TYM as they build a very nice tractor as well.

If it were me, I would pick the one with the most weight for the conditions you described. Either way, good luck and keep us posted!

Thanks all for the replies. The specs are very close from what I have seen. Although, the 494 has about 400-500 lbs more lift on the fel. I hope the TYM is not a Yugo equivalent. Plus I was thinking a warranty of a new tractor would be nice.

cab or open station? if you're working in the woods, i would not recommend cab for obvious reasons. you might inquire the service history of the 5040. you might consider hiring a K service technician to check the 5040 out...is it being sold by the dealership?
my '08 8540 has been bullet proof & unstoppable. can't really say one tractor over the other as am not familiar w/TYM good luck

Open station. The 5040 was self serviced by the 2nd owner (4 yrs) but no records. roughly the same price.

Don’t be fooled by those who try and compare everything other than kubota to some type of known junk. These people are not speaking from experience with other machines. Most likely half of them have never sat on a TYM or even looked at one up close and most likely don’t know anyone who ownes one.
If I had listened to all the nay sayers when I decided to buy my Kioti I would have missed out on the best tractor owning experiance I’ve had.
Comparing any of the tractors on the market with the exception of maybe a used and abused futon to a Yugo is an unjustified attemp at forming an undeserved opinion of any brand.

By the way yesterday I gave a young guy a ride from the side of the road when his 100,000+ mile Honda blew its guts all over the place and he was surprised because everyone told him how great they were and that buying it with that kind of mileage was no problem. They break too, and require maintenance and repair just like everything else does. I told him next time not to listen to everyone and buy a car he feels good about not what his friends and co workers think is the only good car on the market.
