How much oil usage should I expect on new m7040 engine, bought new first 50 hrs none, next 90 hrs about one third down on dip stick. I know this is not much, but I wondered what others did with this engine. I haven't added oil yet, I assume the marks on oil stick is one quart.

Hmmm....mine hasn't ever needed a top off. It is up to 700 hours now (no, I change the oil per the manual for you smart-alecks).

How often do you check the oil? Reason I ask is because if you filled it to the full mark and then drove around, especially if the filter was changed, it will be slightly down. If you checked at 90 hrs. after the 50 hr. change then that lower level would be an expectation.

I assume you checked to see if any drips come from the filter or drain plugs.

I don't have a 7040 but my 5740 has never needed oil added between changes. The newest engines cannot burn much oil and meet emissions regs. I remember the 50's and 60's when 1,000 miles per quart was considered okay (dad was so upset when our 57 Chev never got more than 250 miles per quart that he never bought another GM product). My last 2 cars have been BMWs and have never needed oil between changes which have come at between 16,000 and 22,000 miles. Same thing with our tractors - the older Tier 2 engine JD may take a quart every 200 hours but our Tier 3 and Tier 4 tractors never need oil. The last few days I have been chopping hay with my brother in law. His old IH uses 2 quarts every 8 hours while my new Kubota is still at full.

May I ask what kind of work you were doing with the tractor between the 50 and 90 hour marks?
I have noticed a small drop in engine oil after putting a heavy load on the engine for several hours.
It hasn't really been enough of a drop to add oil but enough to see it on the dipstick. But we're changing the oil more often than the recommended intervals due to very dusty / dirty conditions.

This drop was in 90 hrs, changed at 50 now has 140, have been bush hogging, feeding cattle and moving hay with the fel, talked to dealer, he said this was common, only used about a half ping or so in 90 hrs, will watch closer to see what happens. He recommends changing oil at 200 hrs. I use to change my jd at 100 hrs.

I have about 130 hours on the oil in my 5240 and haven't noticed that it has used any in that time. Of course it hasn't been under a constant hard load either, worst it does is running the brush hog.

Every engine will be different!

Well, it might be a combination of your particular engine with whatever oil is in it. BTW, what kind is it?

Did you ever figure out how much oil is "1/3 way down on the stick"? When you top it off I guess you'll know. a pint in 100 hrs I'd not worry about. A quart makes me start to wonder. In hot weather at high load it might be normal. Like you, I'd want to figure it out.

Our M59 moves about that much on the stick between sitting cold and running, but then it goes back to where it was. No noticeable amount of oil is missing between changes. Over my years I've only had a couple of engines that I recall used a noticeable amount of oil between changes. But other than using oil, they worked the same as the others. I change oil and filter several times in the first 100 hrs and then every year or 200 hrs after that.

Assuming the oil was filled properly, the tractor It has to be either leaking oil, burning it or spitting it out the exhaust. All those are easy to check.

If it was my tractor and I was concerned.... then it doesn't cost much not much to have someone do a compression check and tell you if the engine is within specs. Any diesel shop will send someone out to do that. If it checks out, I'd figure that whatever is happening it is normal for this engine. No biggie.

Like art stated every engine is different but they all have to meet certain specs.Rings have to seat to the cylinder walls and at times some engines will use a little oil during this time.I also have a new M7040 that needed a quart at delivery time rite from the dealer.Since then and so far after 12 HRS.of BUSH HOGGING At 2800 RPM no oil useage at all. Will be changing oil and filter around the 25 HR.mark and at this time will be putting in MOBILE DELVAC 1300 SUPER 15W-40.After 100 HRS. will be using MOBILE DELVAC ELITE 15W-40.That is the OIL I use in My 07 SILVERADO 2500HD with the DURAMAX and after 6 YRS. of all around use and of course running a tuner from PPE SET on LEVEL 4 allthe time except when towing then it is set on the tow tune and after 50,000 miles no issues what so ever.So to me that is good service out of oil.But oil is a subject every one has there own opinion on.The best thing to do is check you oil at least daily or every time BEFORE you use the tractor.I think you will see that all will be good.
