I was reading the manual and it says to put the throttle at half way before turning the key to start.. Seemed odd but figured maybe they want oil to get places faster so I tried it.... !!! That just doesnt seem right! The thing shot right up to like 2k or so and just seems too harsh on a cold engine. What gives? I normally just start things at idle and then bump to a fast idle while warming up. Any thoughts on this?

Also today was raining and down about 60*. I started the tractor with the throttle set at fast idle and it seemed to chug for about 30 seconds or so until it warmed up. Is this normal at 60*? I'd expect it down around freezing but everyone always talks about how these things "Start right up" when cold and so smooth. Doesn't seem to be my experience?

I set my throttle to about 1500 RPMs to start no matter what the temp. As hot as it is now it doesn't take long to move the temp needle. In the winter I do let it run for 5-10 min to get good and warm.

I have also noticed a different engine sound for a short period on initial start up. I think it has something to do with the EPA. My OM states to put the throttle at 1/2 way point to crank engine but my tractor will have to survive the rest of it's life starting at IDLE speed as I'm not going to follow that paragraph in the OM. I started my M7040 last Winter at idle speed with no ill affects.

Like Native Son, I warm mine up at 1500, both L5740 and M8540 which is close to half throttle.

Like 3R & Native Son - I idle @ 1500 until its warm. My OP manual has recommended times for warm up based upon ambient temps. I will usually let it get half way to operating temps and then move out - by the time I get to where the work is its up to full operating temps.

Are you all starting them at 1500rpm? or starting then bumping the throttle? I have no problem Idling at 1500 until warm but letting that thing rip right off the starter doesn't seem right in my book. I've never been told to do this on any engine in my life. I think I'll start as normal and then bump it up to fast idle.

heres what ive done all my life cranking tractors.i start the tractor at the idle rpms an then let it warm up some.then rev the motor to the speed i want to start at.an i wont ever move the throttle to 1500rpms to crank a tractor ever.

I just get in the habit of setting it to 1400~1500 rpm before shutting it off. That way the next time I start the tractor it's already set. I think Kubota just wants the engine higher than idle at start up.
