December of last year I put a post here about glowplugs and winter starting. This thread. http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/kubota-owning-operating/298257-m7040-glowplugs.html

I will be going to T6 Rotella shortly, since I think it will help....BUT....the slowness of the crank is not all about the oil. Since then I've encounter a bit of that in warmer weather. And just couple of days ago, the starter, for lack of a better term, was dragging. Cranking over very sluggish, then it kicked on. I killed it, restarted, and it did not drag that time. It was not cold at all. So...I've got some kind of starter problem....AND....I don't have any idea how to go about diagnosing this issue.

Anybody give me a clue as to how to begin.

You could pull the battery... most places will load test your battery for no charge. Could be a charging problem, loose fan belt, etc. Or worn starter brushes. But probably a bad connection, battery to frame ground... or bad battery connection. If you have any acid corrosion problems on any of your cables, that's where I would look first. Good luck, Jerry.

Like JerryK said... I think Most intermittent start issues are caused by voltage drops in wiring...
Using a good DVOM, check for voltage drops. Easy testing procedure and it will find the problem(s) fast. The higher the current flow the easier to locate. Start with the battery cables, and end with the wiring that activates the solenoid. KennyV

On my M7040 it turns over so easy it almost starts by itself. The first thing to check out is battery voltage you need at least 12.5 to 12.75 at the battery posts before any attempt to start it.Any thing less than that have the battery charged and load tested. If you are good there then attempt to start it and see what the voltage drop is you will need a good digital volt meter for these tests. Also with the key on see if you have the same voltage at the solenoid that you have at the battery remember that is KEY ON ENGINE OFF. If the voltage is different at the solenoid than the battery it is a connection problem or possible a bad cable. If all is good to this point then I would say starter. It sounds that it may have a armature problem with the starter. To check your charging system take you volt meter and check your battery voltage with the engine running you want 13.5 to around 14 volts at your battery posts. I love my M7040 WHAT A MACHINE!!!!!

Ditto on checking battery voltage. A load test is even better. Have you cleaned/tightened all 4 battery cable connections?

Other than checking battery voltage ... Which is good.... I have not checked further.

I will check all of that out, but I'm leaning towards a starter issue. I'll post my results.

Clean battery terminals. They appeared to be in very good shape. I did brighten up the connections, that dull looking gray was there. And i think it helped...... but think i found the problem. The previous owner has installed a 750 CCA battery..... It calls for 900 CCA. With batteries costing what they do may just cope with this. I have bought some T6 oil and will change that hoping it will help.

you would be time and money ahead by putting the right battery on your 7040.i try not tobe cheap when it comes to my tractor no matter how bad it hurts my checkbook.1 more thing that battery could cause you to burn up your starter.

In my neck of the woods, I've never seen a significant difference in cranking speed due to different weights of oil used. I suppose 90wt would make a difference, but... I think your issues are entirely electrical. Definitely put the correct battery in as big bull stated above. No sense destroying your starter if it's not bad.
