Back on this M95 today. We have an oil transfer issue from the center main housing into the left side spindle unit. Parts book shows a seal and a bearing on each end of the center housing where the differential shafts mate with the spindle units. Removed the spindle unit, the bevel gear, and the differential shaft/bearing from the left side. This exposed the seal in question. Sure enough, it has a wrinkle in it, right where the shaft contacts the bottom portion of the seal lip. Okay, that explains the transfer.
It also brings me to the questions. First, why is this only a single lip seal? Secondly, if this is indeed correct, why would the lip face the spindle housing, since the oil I would expect it's designed to contain is in the center housing? Oil level on that side is much closer to the seal than the level in the spindle housing. This configuration may well be what engineers had in mind, but I'm not quite sure I want to put a new seal back in there facing the same direction just because I found it that way.
This tractor was purchased new, and has been on this farm ever since. According to the owner, no one has ever been into any part of the front end, and this is the first time it's given any trouble. The local small town dealer is of little help. I learned that the last time I went there with questions. Anyone out there care to think about this for a bit and maybe offer a thought or two?
