Hello, just getting on, but have looked before for advice on loggin winches. Bought a Norse 350 couple months ago for the L3700 SU, and really like it for hauling felled trees up a steep slope to a flat area to process for the 4-foot woodpile and the brush chipper. Actually did 3 tall black oaks this weekend and a big hemlock, cutting and splitting all 3 oaks by hand in 4' lengths (wife then bucketed them and stacked them). Not bad for 65 years old. Figured the $3000 winch was better insurance than Blue Cross which would have had to kick in on an inevitable chain saw accident trying to process on that steep slope. Got a lot of trees to remove to acquire a 9-mile view of the Connecticut River and its valley close to the Vermont border. Starting to look good already.

OK, that's the intro.

I would love to get a 3pt logging winch. I do have one lingering question about them though. In general, when you winch a log out of the woods, how dirty does it get? I'm a stickler about a sharp chain and I cold see this as a problem. Most of my work would be with no snow on the ground.

Well dadof3, i winch almost all my firewood and depending on ground conditions the logs get muddy. I use to average cutting 20 face cord a day and the chain is going to get dull one way or another, wood dull or mud dull. I grind all my chains and i can usually cut about 10 face cord before putting on a second chain. Then grind them at night when i get done at night. Just a day in the life of me . . . John

Thanks for all the welcome aboard's, folks.

Dadof3, I used it the last two weekends on dry woods ground, with very little dirt. One of the advantages though, is that I'm winching with all the branches still on, so 99% of the tree bark is suspended off the ground. Then I process the branches back up on level ground close to the chipper. I do, granted, get dirt near the nose of the tree, which I sharpen to a point before winching, but I'm cutting 4' away from that when I'm processing, as I split and stack my wood in 4' lengths.........saves 2/3 of the motions of bucketing and stacking, plus it's good cardio for an old guy. Last weekend I split the most wood I've split since fifty years ago, and felt great on Monday........well okay, Tuesday. When the stack is ready to burn in 2 years, I just slice the chain saw right through the stack from the side, cutting 8-10 logs in the stack, to whatever length is fitting for the stove. I do have an old 28" diameter cordwood saw setup, but it's not set up for the Cub yet, don't have a welder.
