"MAD Magazine, once a touchstone of American satirical humor, is leaving newsstands after a 67-year history.

MAD will after August only be available through comic stores and mail-order, former staffers and contributors revealed late Wednesday. There will still be bi-monthly issues, but they will only include vintage MAD material—the only new content will appear in end-of-year specials.

“Working at MAD was a childhood dream come true. MAD is an institution with such a rich history. It informed just about every comedian and writer I (and probably you) look up to,” tweeted Allie Goertz, MAD‘s former editor, who resigned last month—other senior editorial staff appear to have been laid off earlier this week by Warner-owned DC Entertainment, the magazine’s publisher.

“I am profoundly sad to hear that after 67 years, MAD Magazine is ceasing publication,” tweeted“Weird” Al Yankovic, who in 2015 was MAD‘s first guest editor. “I can’t begin to describe the impact it had on me as a young kid–it’s pretty much the reason I turned out weird. Goodbye to one of the all-time greatest American institutions."

It's just a sign of the times. Even the American Forest and Paper Foundation has gone online.

I don't believe that I have ever picked up MAD myself, just as I've never watched The Three Stooges or seen a Bond movie. The last is the only thing which I plan to change.

The last is the only thing which I plan to change.

I have them all at home and think I was 15 when I saw the first one, there are a couple of questionable ones so if you see a bad one don't judge the rest by it.
MAD, remember it well, Spy vs Spy I loved and some of the other characters were so true to life.
Did they still do the folding back cover?

My Dad has a subscription and I still read these. It's too bad, I'll miss them.
I don't think that people read anything not on a computer or phone anymore. My Mom closed up her bookstore about 15 years ago, book sales were way down, and magazines were headed the same way.

Never read a MAD magazine. For that matter, never read a comic book either. Parents were concerned that it would ruin my eyesight. Instead - I read National Geographic & Popular Mechanics. To this day I enjoy reading technical manuals and journals.

I read Mad from my mid teens thru my mid-ish 30s by which point I missed a lot of the cultural references they were satirizing. Never seen a Bond movie (and if I never do that's OK), not a big fan of the 3 Stooges either but I've seen a few of their episodes. Mad was an icon for boomers and maybe the older Gen X'ers but satire seems to be lost on the younger generation. Of course, there's so much that's off limits in these politically correct times.

I'll miss print media when it's gone. It's portable and doesn't need batteries. I don't see the appeal of reading on a dinky cellphone screen.

So that explains it. :)
