Combining a few comments above, this is what works for me using a scraper blade which should act similar to the rake:
- Slow. Low range, lo gear. It's amazing how much better this works, and saves time in the long run.
- Angle. I run mine at full angle and tilted lower on the outside edge. By angling the blade it creates a longer plane and greatly reduces dips/humps. It also keeps the gravel pulled away from the grass. I finish with a single pass with the blade straight.
- Moisture. I have 411's on my drive which are 3/4" down to fines. Grooming the drive after a rain makes me look like a pro compared to when it's dry.

So there you have it. Slow, Angle, Moisture. S.A.M.

Gentlemen, My apology for leaving the table before dinner was done. ..but I ended up with a helluva belly bug. I went from 181lbs to 174 in three days and looked like a tweaker with the DTs under a wool blanket at 87 degrees. I should have asked how Gatorade tasted before I left.. Yeeech!

I was using the JD* with a FEL on the front and no weight on the back + I have fatso turf tires. You can see where the oscillations were coming from. Most of you mentioned speed - I am sure I was going too fast. I also reversed my tines so they would 'drag over' rather than 'scoop'.

I love the stuff you have made! You guys are great. That's a very cool way to mod a box blade bulldogshotgun.

jenkinsph .. can you tell me how these 'landplanes' work? ...does the soil comes over the top of the blade when it is 'shaved'?

Again, I thank you for the response.

Jim

*Thank you Mr. Furgeson! I left that 1957 F40 sit out for 15-6yrs. It would always start - rarely needed work ..but the PTO clutch went and was simply getting nasty. So I sold it to a fellow for $1,000. ...I had paid $2,500. (how'z a $100 a year capital cost!)

Yes the dirt does flow over the blades but quite a bit of it is carried along to drop in low spots too. Basically the long skids average tend to average out the ground whether on a drive or field. They are made to slide down the road with the hitch fully lowered, so the tractor wheels can ride over small bumps and dips without causing the seesaw effect you get with boxblades.
