Made me proud

Oldest daughter is a school teacher. Last week the people from the state deferred comp (401K) group came to their school trying to get the teachers to sign up. When it came my daughter's turn to be interviewed she went into the office and the guy started his sales pitch while entering her info. He suddenly stopped and said, "Wow"! He was amazed that a 31-year old had that much already in her account. He did some quick calculations and told her that if she continued her contributions that she would have a very comfortable retirement indeed. He sat and looked at the computer screen for a moment and then told her that most young teachers didn't start thinking about retirement until they hit forty-five years of age or older. Then he asked her why she started putting money back at such an early age when most of her peers did not. She replied, "My daddy made me!"

One of those moments when you are proud to be a dad.

I made my oldest daughter open up a Roth IRA as soon as she could. She was not happy as she was starting her college adventure. I sat her down and opened the family books and we had a lesson on paying yourself first and why. I also showed her the difference between starting her retirement funds at 18 instead of 27 like me. She has the potential to have three times as much as her folks 10 years earlier. She got it!

Great story. Very important aspect of life to teach your kids. My son is in high school with a part time job. The rule --- he saves 50% of his paycheck. As long as he lives with us he saves. He is OK with this rule and, I hope, it teaches him the value of saving for the future.

Good for you. I have had a similar situation from my daughter. She's 38 and doing exceptionally well. She told me once, after college and a masters degree that she had the " fear of respect" for me and that since I was her daddy 24/7 she figured she had to be my daughter 24/7 and buckle down and get the job done and get down to life. I am sooo very proud of her.
