So I was finiah mowing for the first time and took a break. I got back on the tractor brought the rpms up to the proper leave and engaged the pto. The mower attempted to start and then immediately the tractor died and turned off. I took the shaft off and noticed the blades on the mower were no longer turning by hand and I couldn't move them at all. The pto on the tractor works fine still and it's just the finish mower that isn't working. This is a brand new mower and tractor. I did not hit anything and the grass I was cutting is about 7 inches long. Any ideas?

Did you check the gearbox for oil on the mower? They usually don't come filled with gear oil. I'm going to guess no oil. If so you will probably need new gearbox.

The Bush hog I bought came ready to go and the finiah mower came all together with pto shaft installed. No indicators that the gearbox was empty. Dealer checklist states it should have filled the gearbox with oil.

Perfectly simple question asked by "Btown":

and you start quoting the "Checklist" - so it must be something else... Blunt blades perhaps? Maybe 7" grass is too long?? :confused2:

"No indicators that the gearbox was empty." (I can think of one...)

And what is a "finiah mower"??

:2cents:

You said you brought the RPMs up and turned the PTO on... typically you engage the PTO at idle and bring the mower up to 540 rpm by raising the RPMs. IF the tractor stalls and PTO engagement at idle, then bump it up a couple of hundred RPM from idle and engage the PTO.

If you are ramping the RPMs up to whatever 540 is then you engage the PTO you are really stressing the internals of your tractor - eventually the PTO is going to grenade on you.

Now back to the mower - pull your fill plug and check to make sure they put oil in the gearbox of the mower... the checklist might say it should have been filled, or checked off that it was filled but check it and call your dealer. If you bought it from the dealer you live at I know where you bought it from, they will come out and check it out for you - they are a GREAT dealer to work with. If they delivered it as a package all hooked up it should have the gearbox filled, but I checked out my mower before it was delivered just to make sure.

I know I am not a dealer, or typing master on my phone, but I do try to help people rather than be as sarcastic and unhelpful as possible on these forums. Thanks for your two cents, I will be sure to disregard any of your help in the future.

I spoke to the dealer and the finish mower was set up and filled correctly when it was delivered to me. The dealer stated the gearbox was more than likely seized up at no fault of mine. It is being picked up tomorrow to be fixed or replaced at no charge to me.

I hope if you are a dealer your customers don't view this forum and see your "help" to other owners.

Have a fantastic day my friend.

I really appreciate your advice and help with this Clevalley. The dealer near me is taking care of it. I learned some valuable things by reading your reply. Thanks again for trying to troubleshoot this for me. I am no tractor expert and need all the help I can get with my new piece of equipment. I am doing my best to educate myself on here.

I think I would have have grabbed a socket and checked the oil. Even if I bought this from the dealer and it is supposed to be full of oil I would check it before use. Two minutes to check can stop days of down time because someone missed something. Let us know what they find out. It really sucks to get something brand new. You use it once and it breaks.

I agree. In the future I will always check everything before using it. Thanks btown.
