Hey everyone, I'm hoping y'all can help me diagnose whats going on with this tractor. Was starting and running fine a couple days ago, and after running it for an hour or so, we shut it off and now it won't start.

What I mean by not starting is this:
1) at first, it wouldn't crank at all, but you could hear the relay click
2) after wiggling the wire harness under the hood, we were able to get it to bump crank, like it just barely bumps the motor, but only for a split second, then nothing. you have to return the key to off, then back all the way to start in order to get the "bump" crank. we cleaned the connections and they look ok. we tested all the relays and they are ok.
3) we pulled the starter off and took it to napa and they said it was fine. also, I pulled the wire from the solenoid, and I can get it to crank without issue by jumping the spade terminal on the solenoid (from the ignition switch) to the main lug on the starter (power comes straight from the battery). While it will crank fine doing this, it won't start.
4) I checked the glow plug bar and connection and it looks ok
5) I put a jumper wire on a few of the safety switches under the "passenger side" and no change. The seat interlock switch is jumpered.

Being able to jump the starter and crank the motor, but no start, leads me to believe it's some sort of fuel/engine shutoff switch or solenoid.

Would really appreciate some guidance on what to check/diagnose next.

thank you!

While I'm not familiar with your tractor I'd say you are correct about a fuel solenoid as that is what is typically de-energized to stop a diesel engine.

If you don't have a manual you might be able to follow the fuel lines to see if you find a "gizmo" with either one or two wirers that seems like its in the fuel line flow, probably pretty close to your injector pump. The solenoid could be faulty but more likely its one of the safety interlocks not being made.

In addition to the safety's you mentioned they typically include range selector in neutral, PTO's (mid if you have one and main) not engaged, parking brake on. These either need to be confirmed they are functioning with a meter or they need to be bypassed to ensure the fuel solenoid can then be powered.

Hopefully someone with an electrical schematic or more knowledge specifically to your tractor will reply to help further.

Ditto on checking your PTO push button (I assume you have one on the dash). Sometimes they get pushed in without you realizing it and it can cause the symptoms you're quoting.

Also,, another guy posted a while back that there was a safety switch wire on, or near the rear axle by one of the tires. It had come unplugged, and it caused a no start.

The interesting thing about your situation is that you had it running fine. I suspect you either pushed a button inadvertently, or ran over something that caused a wire underneath to get cut, or unplugged.

Good luck!

You didnt mention anything about checking the battery ? I have a 2810 and it has the fuel rod you pull out to shut it off .

Ditto to "really" checking the battery. Not just looking at the terminals, or even putting a multi-meter on it. You need to have a load test run on it.

I was out mowing one day, tractor started just like always. Stopped for lunch. Came back out 20 minutes later, and battery was dead as a door-nail. Replaced the battery, and voila !!

battery tested good. put new relays in and a new starter switch. same symptoms. pulled the starter and had it tested twice and no problems there.

If I put a trigger switch between the solenoid and the batt pos on the starter it spins and starts and runs just fine.

I can get it the switch to "bump" meaning itll throw the starter and turn the flywheel for just a bit then stops.

In order for it to "bump" with the key switch I have to reset the switch all the way to off and then throw it all the way to start. if I let it go back to just run and then try to start it, it will not "bump"

I'm about to give up!

Not familiar with your machine. My Mahindra 3525 has a PTO safety switch under the left foot rest as I am seated on the tractor. Debris from bush hogging built up in the switch and caused it to prevent the starter from turning over regardless of the position of the PTO control. I cleaned the switch housing out. Now it starts normally.

Do you have an electrical schematic for your tractor, if you do and can post it I'm sure someone would be able to explain what you are experiencing.

My best guess, which is all that it is..... it sounds like something is "latching" the fuel solenoid open when turn your key to the start position which then allows you to engage the starter with your hot wire from the battery and it runs.

If it is an HST model check the safety switch attached to the directional pedals. This switch open will cause momentary starter engagement that you describe. must have continuity through switch to start.
