While brush hogging today I thought I had fell in a hole but it turned out the front left wheel had cracked in half (not vertically but completely around the rim). I can see what appears to be a long time rusting crack where it fell apart. I can replace the wheel and tire but the one that came of is filled with a heavy solid of some kind. The solid fill material is black and pretty darn heavy. It's definitely not foam.

So my question is "What is that stuff that is/was inside the tire?" and my next question is can I fill the tire with whatever that stuff is when the new wheel and tire arrive?

I've learned a lot here. I don't post much but I do read a lot.

Thanks.

Sound's like it is foam filled. Are you the original owner?
A long time ago I helped a buddy cut a ff tire off the rim and iirc it was also black.

Foam filled is advertised to be as heavy as water filled.

apparently, you need to take it much easier on the tractor, wheels should not be braking!.

Thanks. I assumed foam would be really light. Good to know.

Or the lugs were loose a little or it was a poorly made rim.

From what I have seen and heard adding foam to tires does prevent flats.
It also reduces the cushioning effects that air provides.
On a smaller diameter front tire reducing the cushioning will definitely have the effect of transmitting more shock and side loading of the rims while hitting bumps and turning.
Years ago there were quite a few reports of front wheels separating when foam filled.
Most of those were on 2wd units and as I recall it was a consensus at the time that the foam was preventing the tires from flexing with turn loading which was increasing the wheel side loading and breaking wheels.
