Mahindra 4110 4x4
I had a problem with the pto on my Mahindra 4110 today and was wondering if anyone else has had any problems. It has been about 2 weeks since I have used the pto and I had some bushhogging I needed to to. I put on my KingCutter 5' cutter and when I tried to turn it on, nothing happened. All the lights came on telling me it was running but it wasn't. After trying everything I could think of in the field, I headed back to the shop. When I got to the shop, my father was there and I told him what was happening. Thinking I was doing something wrong he had to try but it still wouldn't start. After deciding I would have to take it to the dealer, I got back on the tractor to put it back in the shop and I tried one more time. My father said he thought he saw the pto shaft move then. I pressed and depressed the pto button on the steering column a couple of times and then all of a sudden it started. I turned it off and on several times and it worked every time then. I proceeded to do my bushhogging and ponder on what could have been wrong. The only thing I can think of is maybe some dirty contacts in the pushbutton on the column. But when it wouldn't start, like I said, all the lights came on. The red light on the column and the pto in operation light on the dash. I guess I need to talk with my local dealer and see if he has an answer. Like I said, dirty contacts in the pushbutton is all I can come up with for now. Has anyone else had a similar problem? If so, I would like to hear what you found out. Otherwise I have no complaints about my tractor.

Nah... not with 23 hours on your tractor...

Sounds more like a "fussy" PTO interlock switch (mechanical adjustment/borderline engaged)...

I had exactly the same problem. Sometimes it would work, sometimes not. 2 things - one "user error" one defect...

User Error: check to make sure you have the switch to the right of the steering wheel turned to "Manual" as the "Auto" function will automatically turn off the PTO when the 3 pt. is raised or if the clutch is depressed. (BTW, this was not my issue - and I like using the "Manual" mode anyway because that way I know exactly when things should be running and when they shouldn't. I don't want (nor do I need) the tractor to "think" for me. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif)

Defect: Assuming this doesn't solve your problem, the issue is in the solenoid assembly that turns on the PTO. Apparently moisture gets in to the assembly and locks it up. The problem for me was that every other time I needed the mower, I had to turn off the engine, jump down, and "reset" this solenoid. (Mine would also “lock up” due to heat buildup from running the PTO.) I took my tractor to the dealer who said that Mahindra USA claimed that they had been seeing this problem every so often and they replaced the entire assembly for $0. (warranty).

In a pinch, you can temporarily “fix” this problem. Look on the underside of your tractor, right side, under the operator station. You will see an assembly that controls the engagement of the PTO - maybe 8" long. At the back of the assembly, you will see a plastic cap about an inch/inch and a half or so in diameter. The center of this cap is hollow (donut). In the center of the cap (can’t really see it) there is a plunger that is connected to the solenoid.

DO THE FOLLOWING WITH THE TRACTOR TURNED OFF!
To free up the solenoid, take your car keys, a screwdriver, or even a stick and push the plunger (which is flush within the center of the cap) - again, with your tractor not running. It will go in about an eighth of an inch or so once it "breaks free." I did this per the instructions of my dealer (who contacted Mahindra USA) and sure enough, when I hop back on, the PTO starts spinning when I hit the big red button.

Give the stick/key trick a try with the motor off and see if it is a “one time fix." If you have to ever do it a second time, take it in and make 'em replace the assembly. Since I had mine repaired I’ve had no problems.

Good luck.

I have this same problem whenever it is very damp. Especially if the tractor gets rained on.

Went to use my new 5' KingKutter for the first time and...nothing. The pto light goes on but nothing happens. Will go try your suggestion right now and report to you guys later. Thanks for the tip.

Ok, that tooka whole 2 minutes and it worked. I love this web site. I had a farmer friend of mine come and look at it and he couldn't figure it out. I told him that I would log onto TBN and have it figured out by morning. He laughed at me. Did some "test" brush hogging at 12:30am. Spot lights sure come in handy.

Glad it worked for you! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Remember - if it happens again, I'd sure take it to the dealership to get fixed as it is covered under warranty and will probably only get worse as time goes on.

Take care.
