Hi all
My 4110 was split 3 or 4 years ago replacing power take off gear. Tranny sealed with some kind of silicone. OK couple yrs. Started as a slow leak & progressively worse, as usual. Could I seal from outside, use thicker hytran, use a stop leak of sorts in fluid or Use duct tape (joke)? Of course fluid should be full always. How LOW can I run it without hurting machine? I'm thinking as long as hydraulics will raise rear mower fully I should be OK. But, I don't like running on a prayer.

Looking for ideas, information. and experienced comments.

Cheers.....Coffeeman

If just silicone was used to seal the two cases, I don' t think there is a sealer you can pour into the oil to make silicone magically reseal. I know there are sealers for oil systems, but those are more or less solvents that soften the seals so they start to seal again. But with silicone as a gasket, once it leaks it leaks. Are all of the bolts tight? If so you will need to break it apart again to thoroughly clean the mating halves and re-apply a silicone sealer. I would use a sealer like Permatex Ultra Blue. B.

Good point about tight bolts. I wondered about same thing. I got a large hematoma, on my leg at shin, as big as a a baseball. Swelling has to go down and collected blood drains out. Very painful deal. Guy who looked at machine determined bolts were tight because lock washers looked compressed. Gotta get "Guy" to put a wrench on connecting bolts. It's a shame can't use something like JB Weld?

Lot of extra work if job was botched by previous mechanic...

Looks bad...BUT , Gotta fix it. Cheers..Coffeeman

Was an extremely tedious job when I had to do the rear split on my 4110 years ago by myself at home. I took great pains to not let oil get on the mating surfaces after cleaning them good with Brakleen. I used some ultra gray silicone gasket maker and then came the fun part of rolling the front half on a jack to the rear half and aligning 4 or 5 shafts into their respective spots inside the trans/rear diff., all without disturbing that wet silicone bead and doing it all in time before the silicone started setting-up. Being a pro auto mechanic obviously helped with my knowledge of sealing things like that, ALOT of luck was involved too !!! Any good mechanic could EASILY have some leakage in a job like that. Won't be any way to repair that leak without splitting the joints apart again and getting the surfaces absolutely clean/dry.
