Tractor
mahindra 4500 2wd
i just bought my first tractor, a mahindra 4500 2wd with loader, box blade, 6' shredder. and a trailer for $17895.00
i just have 14 hours on it. this tractor really really has to warm up or it will sputter when you throttle up. once the temp gauge gets up to as far as it goes " about 1/4 of an inch into the green" then it runs great.
also when i got the new trailer it had used tires on it, the dealer said the sputtering and the used trailer tires are normal. i would send a picture but i havent figured that out yet.

i would like to add that i do love this tractor, i was discing about 5 acres of my land the other day and the sound this machine makes is cool, and the ride is a smooth that only many thousands of pounds of steel can give.

Congrats on the new 4500! I don't think the "sputter" when cold is natural. Diesels aren't built that way. True, you shouldn't be peggin' it until its been running for a while but my 6000 could take an hour to get into the green on the temp guage. I think the dealer needs to check the injection pump. It may need to be turned "up" a tad. Enjoy! BobG in VA

Bob could very well be right about the injector needing to be jacked up a few notches to stop the sputtering. My 4500's a bit older than your's and on immediate startup - it sputters a little bit also but within 3 minutes - it seems ready to work. As anyone will tell you...always let it warm up a few minutes but if I left mine to idle until the temp gauge showed anything, I'd be waiting for 1/2 the day.

As for the used trailer tires...it happened to me also but instead mine were recaps on a single axle 2,000 lb trailer. Never again! Both tires went out of round(possibly a slipped belt in the radial) but none the less - it cost me more in the end. Later on, I bought a new 30', triaxle trailer and it came with new tires that I need to haul my tractor and accessories around on. I feel a lot safer on the highway just knowing that these tires were made for the job. By the way - sounds like a good deal overall on your purchase. Best of luck to you and enjoy! Clyde

the dealer said, and also the head mechanic, that the e.p.a. made them add a sensor that measures the temp around the engine and advances the timing untill it reaches 104 degrees, the mechanic sais more like 140. all i know is i dont like it. i was running it on a cold day and after shredding 20 acres i stopped at the house and let it idle for 10 or 15 minits, got back on and it had cooled enough to sputter again.

fish,my 4500 is a year old, when i was at my dealer test driving it ,it also had a sputter.the dealer also said because epa required this timing setting it was sputtering, but, that they would readjust it before i picked it up,they did and it runs great.also i don't know what your shredder weighs but the tractor comes in at 4752lbs. w/o the loader.by the way what loader do you have?

its a ml260 loader, it looks pretty heavy duty, the sub frame looks like it should be on a tank.

Just curious. What would have been the difference in price for the 4wd model. It seems up here in Washington the prices are much higher than what has been quoted from other owners. Makes me think I should travel to get one.

im at work, i have a price list at home, but if i remember right 4wd was $4600.00 extra. i couldnt justify it for me but ill bet that new 4320 or 4230 would be worth it.

If you are in the market for a Mah, let me suggest you call J 5 Tractors @ 936-396-6032 -- they are located in Normangee, TX across the street from the largest Kubota dealer in the US and they seem to really cut prices. I am buying a 4530 from them and they had the best price around! I am from Louisiana so the "no sales tax" really sealed the deal for me.
