Mahindra 5430 2011 4x4 model
Hello guys, evidently a stick or stob has damaged the seal that holds in the 90w gear oil for the front axle where the 4x4 drive shaft comes in to the front end. I got to my barn today after being gone a few days and all the gear oil was on the floor.

Anyone have any experience changing this seal? Can a shade tree mechanic do it or should I take it a shop somewhere?

Thanks.

Should be a very straight forward job.

On that splined coupler, there should be a roll pin in the middle. Pull it out and then slide the coupler backwards over the shaft. You may want to clean it a little bit first.

Once the coupler is out of the way, this will open a space between both shafts that should allow to pull the old seal out and put the new one in. If it's still not enough space, on the other end of the shaft that comes out of the transmission, there is another coupler like that. You can pull it out as well to get the shaft out of the way.

To actually pull the old seal out, you can poke the seal with a screw driver or something pointy and sharp, then pull it out. Accordingly to the parts catalog, there is not a C clip hold the seal out. So it's just a matter of pulling the seal.

Wow, that is exactly what I needed to know. I couldn't find a diagram on line anywhere so I didn't know what was behind it. I also didn't know if pulling that collar off would give me enough play to get that old seal off.

So when I slide that coupler back will the front part of the shaft move or are there more bearings and such that hold it in place and it is just a matter of pulling the old one off around the shaft and getting the new one to slide on?

Can you direct me to the parts catalog you found with that part number and maybe a diagram of what exactly i am dealing with?

Thanks again for your time and help!

The shaft is made to come out easily. Hence the two couplers. One in the front and the other in the back. Nothing unexpected should be come out.

The parts catalog I used is the Mahindra Website. They have the parts catalog available online. I can't share a direct link to the seal, so you have to search the model of tractor and so on: https://parts.mahindrausa.com/

For the seal, you click on Front Axle, then Front Axle 2 and the seal is the part #19.

For the shaft and the splined couplers, click on Front Axle, then Front Axle Support and Drive. The couplers are the parts #5 and the shaft is the part #9. #4 are the roll pins.

The seals looks like to be a common part that should be easy to get. Even a place like Motion Industries should be able to help you out in case the dealer doesn't have any stock or something.

For some reason I am blocked from that mahindra parts page. Says....

not sure if my work has blocked me or what.

Thanks for the help!! I will try on my home computer later.

By the way... are those seals very hard to get in and out? I have heard some horror stories. I guess it depends on how much access you have.

Ops, should've tried that link first.

Try this one and click on Parts Catalog: Mahindra® Parts For Sale | US | Mahindra® Tractor Parts

Shouldn't be too hard to pull out. I'll see if I can find a video with some tricks to pull seals out.

I think this is a good one, using the self tapping screws and pulling out with a crow bar. Just don't go too deep.

Okay, that new link worked. I found the part. Only $12, that isnt bad. I guess I will try to get that collar loose and see how much room i have to deal with. I really don't want to have to take it loose from the rear also.

This gets me started and now I know 100% more than I did a couple hours ago.

Thanks again for the help and the links.

Will do.

First road block is that no one has that part. Don't know when they can get it. ;-(
