mahendra 3616
I have a 3616 mahindra that is difficult to start in any temp. I will be checking the glow plugs soon. I plug it in to block heater and gets nice and warm but its still dificult to start. I decided a was going to give it, and I mean a nothing squirt of either and the **** things starts just like my MF 135. My 1964 mf starts like a show room tractor in -35 celcius, as long as the battery is fresh.
Anyone have an idea other than glow plugs, i also dont want to use either. But i want the 2 year old to start easier. Some ideas would be appreciated.

Never use ether to start it. For one, if the glow plugs are working, you can blow things up by using ether. It also rounds over the piston rings, causing lower cold compression, and further problems with cold starts.

Since it has trouble starting even when plugged in, I think your problem is something other than glow plugs. Glow plugs should not be needed unless it's pretty cold, and if it won't start with the block heater, that seems to eliminate them as a cause.

What happens when you crank it and it won't start? Does the motor spin quickly? Does the engine sound like it has good compression? Do you get white smoke out of the exhaust?

My best guess without more details is that you have a fuel line leak, and the fuel line sucks in some air when it sits unused, causing it to take some cranking before refilling with fuel. Does it start any easier if you ran it recently, and start harder if it's left sitting for days/weeks?

It has black smoke at startup, it starts easy all day long after the overnight sit. Temp today was -12 celcius, it cranks fast. I was thinking maybe line sucks air.

When i crank it just blows smoke eventually it will start. I hit the glow plugs a few times initially now.

AS other have said, you should not use starting fluid to start it especially when you have heated it up with a block heater. Starting fluid can damage the rings and break the piston lands.

It should turnover quickly with a warm water jacket and start right away. Have you read the OEM instructions for cold weather starting and followed them? What color "smoke" do you see at the exhaust when the engine is being cranked? White is unburned fuel, black usually means too little air, i.e. fuel rich. If you have black smoke, make sure you air filter is not clogged or there is not a mouse nest in the intake, etc.

I have seen far to many times this be the result of bad battery cables. They look fine, smell fine and taste fine but have poor conductivity. Start and end with those before much else.

If you have a hand primer on the fuel filter assembly, you can try pumping it before starting. If that works, visit the leaking fuel line issues.

Also, Mahindra commonly uses a timer device called a KSB for cold start assist. It advances the timing for the first 20 minutes of runtime. If that device is bad and isn't advancing the timing, it can be harder to start.

Thanks. I was looking at the smoke today snd it is white not black. Im going to look at the hand primer. Thanks again.

White smoke is partially burned fuel. If you get white smoke almost right away, I think you have fuel available. If it takes a while for the white smoke to start, a leaking line could be an issue. I bet that your battery is weak, or you have a poor connection somewhere. You can test this by checking voltage at the battery while cranking, and checking voltage at the starter while cranking. If the numbers are drastically different, then it's a connection or wire problem. If the battery itself drops, then it's a battery issue. Low voltage will cause slow cranking which will not heat the air enough to ignite the fuel. If that's the case you'll just belch white smoke until eventually it catches or the battery dies completely.

I agree the white smoke is immediately. Thanks for your input as i am actually on my way to start the tractor again.since its blocking my quad. It has become my second quad. Running around last few days thru 1 ft of snow.
