I have an old 40' x 50' black barn from the early 1900's
I was wondering if it's possible to paint the old 'Mail Pouch' ad on it
I've always loved the old Mail Pouch barns 'n the nostalgia
Anyone have any knowledge or experience on barn ads?
Any help is greatly appreciated!

I've thought that if I ever get a yard barn, I'll paint the mailpouch ad on one side, See Rock City, The Lost Sea and Ruby Falls on the others....

You could get a good picture of a mailpouch barn in your computer.
Use a picture editing program to put a small target X in each corner.
Next, rent or borrow a projector and project the picture onto the barn at night and paint the outlines.
If it takes multiple nights, use the target X's to line up the picture each night.
Once you get the outlines, you can finish it in the daylight.
I've seen professional mural painters use this technique many times. It works well.

I thought about that type of method of painting it.
my biggest concern would be legal issues, is it legal?
would there be some kind of infringement issue?
i really just want the barn looking good and histiroc/nostalgic

Call it Americana art and you're covered under the 1st amendment.
Take payments for it from Mailpouch and that's a differrent story.
Be prepared for complaints from do-gooders. ;)

Moss,
Thanks, I'll just do that
Do-gooders don't do anyone any good!
If they had anything good in their life their nose wouldn't be in anyone else's!

I contacted the local (James Madison University) art department and they agreed to paint something special on my barn doors. I just didn't fallow it thru.

Sadly now a days you will need permits up the wazoo. I'm sure there have been 100 laws passed since they used to pain these on barns. City permits, County permits, Advertising permits, blah, blah, blah.

I can't help you with your question, but thanks for posting the thread. I've never
heard of Mail Pouch Barns, or Mail Pouch Tobacco for that matter. It's amazing what
one can learn on TBN. Thanks again!!

Heh, I have an old Mail Pouch barn I set and look out into the middle of the field at from the front porch on a nightly basis. It is long abandoned and beyond reasonably saving, but it still has a lot of character and the deer and other wildlife seems to love it.

As far as the question from Jakeesspoo (welcome to TBN new member!) on a projector and image editing program, any projector with proper connectors for your computer and any image editing program you feel comfortable with from Microsoft Paint to Adobe Photoshop.

Sounds nice.

A few years ago, National Public Radio did a segment on this -- the last surviving barn painter had just died. They said that these guys would drive around the country and approach the owner and then go to work. They did the painting free hand and adjusted the size to the size of the barn. Amazing. They also did two or three a day - also Amazing. You might find the show in their archives.

Couple near me, I'll try to get some pics. Neat idea about painting a new one. I'm just putting a small barn up. I might paint it like that.
