I bought some plants from Burpee's last year because they were sold out of the seeds. It was for a new sauce tomato and I really wanted to try them, so I bit the bullet and bought plants. Mine arrived in nice little plastic containers, the seeding compound was still damp and they did very well. This year I ordered early enough to get the seeds. I like starting from seeds, enjoy the work and it's a lot cheaper.
As for Gurney's, I've order a lot of stuff from them over the years, just no live plants. I've only had one problem when they sent me some other persons order (and a big one at that!) I called them up, explained the situation. They apologized and said they'd ship out the correct order the next day. When I asked them how they wanted to handle me sending them the wrong order back, they told me to just keep it or give it to someone else that could use it.
