The Gurney's Seed Catalog has a $25 off $50 order for the month of January. I am thinking about ordering some tomato plants from them. I especially want to try the Cherokee Purple. Has anyone ordered any live garden plants mailorder?

Thanks in advance for your response.

Can you source any locally? You would be so much better off. I've never been the least bit impressed by the delivered condition of any mail order tomato transplants I've ever bought. Cherokee purple is a fairly popular tomato seems that many garden centers should have it. We always sell that one along with Brandywine and a few others. Or maybe even get some seeds and start your own plants.

I bought some plants from Burpee's last year because they were sold out of the seeds. It was for a new sauce tomato and I really wanted to try them, so I bit the bullet and bought plants. Mine arrived in nice little plastic containers, the seeding compound was still damp and they did very well. This year I ordered early enough to get the seeds. I like starting from seeds, enjoy the work and it's a lot cheaper.

As for Gurney's, I've order a lot of stuff from them over the years, just no live plants. I've only had one problem when they sent me some other persons order (and a big one at that!) I called them up, explained the situation. They apologized and said they'd ship out the correct order the next day. When I asked them how they wanted to handle me sending them the wrong order back, they told me to just keep it or give it to someone else that could use it.

What DFB say's has been our experience also, done fine with seed, but poor track record with almost every live plant from several venders. I think it has more to do with shipping plants to areas they were not grown in and acclimated, most plants I buy local, do quite well.
