I am planning to build a hydraulic winch using an existing 5hp briggs engine ... just a few questions for the group

do i need a clutch between the motor and the pump or direct drive?

What size/flow of pump/motor/tank would be reccommended to lift 3000lb +?

I want to do this for ~$500 so if i have to undersize it, i can double block the load or use 2:1 gear ratio to reduce the effective load.

Any comments would be most appreciated!

Jkel- Welcome to TBN! This is a friendly group, but I suspect that your post has generated a lot of head-scratching! Engines, generate mechanical power, Hydro-pumps, transform that, for fluid driven rams, motors etc. Winches are designed to enhance mechanical force by reducing speed thru gearing, to increase force. Think you've got a couple "Apples in the Orange basket"! You need to explain exactly what your trying to accomplish before the talent on this board can give you any guidance. ~Scotty

Keep this simple; look at a hydraulic power pack for a log splitter (gas motor and pump). This is what you will need to start with and you can find a used or surplus unit relatively easily.
I made a hyd winch for my truck using a logsplitter pump (two stage) and a high torque motor, coupled to the spool with a 10:1 reducer (chain and sprockets). It worked very well but I did not use it for lifting.

What you will have to figure out is how you want to do your gearing. Using a suitable slow speed high torque hydraulic motor you would be able to get away without gearing and makes the build much easier (and probably less weight).

Also, you need to consider braking; if you are lifting then you need to consider how to hold a load (mechanical brake, ratchet, etc). If you use a worm gear then this function would be built in.

You might find it less expensive to consider belt driving a worm gear reducer. You will have to figure out how to reverse your spool (second belt?) but everything else is easy.

You might also want to check Princess Auto or HF, I have seen some winches for very cheap (electric).
