LilRhody,
Did that annual spring time event for over twenty five years on the farm.
We had close to 700 buckets /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif than swtich to the plastic setup and grow over 1,300.taps. /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

Go the plastic setup if you have over 50 buckets and use gravity to fill your holding tanks, also keep your equipment clean and soft dry maple gives a good level heat range.

You maybe in for some long nights boiling also busy on the weekends, and if you should go plastic check your lines often, carry portable drill, hammer, pliers, roll of wire, roll of black electric tape for repairs.

Oh by the way I don't miss it.

LR, I don't do it but noticed there are some taps out near us. It's not like I remember as a Boy Scout... now they use plastic tubing running between the trees and into a 55 gallon drum every here and there. I'm sure it's more efficient, just doesn't look as "homey".

Thomas, Thats A LOT of pancakes! I'm looking to do it for the wife and I (approx. 10 or less). Where can I get the gizmo that measures the sugar content of the sap?

LilRhody,
Have you check out a feed store {Agway & Blue Seal etc..} for sugaring devices, also some hardware stores that sell woodstoves smaller scale of farm product might be able to help.

You folks run about three weeks earlier in sugaring than we do up here, and just about an month there will be maple syrup candy, syrup on home made dounts etc.. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

What setup do you have to boil the sap?

Do you know the Greenvill,RI area?

Looks like a nasty storm coming Sunday enjoy the outside today.

Thomas, I plan on using my stove-top at first and see how I like doing maple sugar. I have plans for a sugar/smoke shack; so we will see...
I'm about 15 miles west north/west from Greenville.

LilRhody,

This will be our 12th year tapping. We do it as a small backyard hobby. 85 taps, all buckets. Last year was our first with a "real" evaporator and we put out about 15 gallons. Started tapping this year Feb 5th and
have a little over 5 gallons. I'll use a few gallons throughout the year and rest I use for barter and christmas gifts. Have fun!
