Finally went to the new Marine Corps Museum at Quantico MCB yesterday... Neat place to spend the day. Also, went to the base commissary and stocked up on can goods for the winter (much cheaper than local stores). Museum is FREE and parking is FREE.

I took my son there while ago. We both liked it a lot, especially the installations.

On a recent trip, I finally stopped at Travis AFB, and went to thier museum. Very interesting, how it came in existance, what it does, the planes that have flown through there. One of other Scout parents is USAF Reserve, and flies C5's from there.

I had never been right up next to a B52; that was interesting. I grew up in the Sacramento, Ca area. There were always B52' flying out of the old Mather AFB. Real interesting when they did scrambles(Mather was a SAC base).

We used to live across from the SAC base in Bossier City, LA. Watching the B52s fly was something else. Every once in awhile they would fly low over our house. EVERYTHING shook when that happened.

When the base had open house we would go over and see the planes and the flyovers. You could walk up and look into the bomb bays on the B52. They would have stairs setup so you can peer into the cockpit. You could walk through C5's and C130s. The most impressive aircraft was the SR71. Really surprised they had it on display. No walking up to it though. It was roped off with Airmen armed with M16's standing guard.

Seeing the battleship NC and AL is pretty cool too. So big yet after awhile so small. :D And kinda crude. But very impressive. :D

I stopped by the SAC Museumin Nebraska back in 1997 I think it was though their website bio says the museum opened in 98'?

Anyway, there was a Blackbird sitting there on the tarmac. A much more innocent time relative to today, no guards, nothing! Somewhere, I have photos stashed away. When I come acrossed them, I will have to see if they even had it roped off.

Not far away, a U2 sat. Very humbling!

We have been to the USS Hornet, CVS-12 a number of times. Done the Overnite program 4 times with Cub and Boy Scouts. Very interesting. Amazing to think, the newer carriers make the Essex class carriers look small...

On topic, there was always a group of USMC on CVS-12; there were nukes on board, and they protected them...

I went through MCRD San Diego in 1983. About five or six years later, a neighbor of my parents came by and asked if my Dad had been in the Marine Corps. He said that he just went to the Marine Corps Museum there and saw a picture of Ed Walker spit shining his boots. I've never been there, and have no idea is the picture is still there, but the odds are good that I was in the Marine Coprs Museum for awhile.
