I am ignorant about marine diesel sold down at the docks. Is it the same as off-road? Same as on-road? Completely different?
Does it have fewer taxes (is it cheaper)?
I have a hard time finding off-road diesel around here, but we have plenty of boat docks.

Marine and off road diesel is the same, both are allowed up to 500PPM sulphur.

For a reference LSD is 500PPM or less, ULSD is 15PPM max.

Off road and Marine diesel does not have road taxes added ($.35 a gallon)

Most likely the Marine and off road disel in your area is the same diesel as the on road (taxed) diesel except for the color.

I'm sure it's different in different places, but my experience has been that both diesel and gasoline sold on the docks is sold for a much higher price than the local service stations get. So the lack of road tax doesn't really help.

I have seen the difference in prices also.

In addition, I think that in my state marine diesel is taxed, it's just a marine-use state tax instead of a road use tax. If you can't find offroad diesel, I would just deal with on-road diesel and figure you're contributing to your state's roads (hopefully!).

Sorry I have no experience with Marine diesel prices, I do use off road diesel when it's convinient (about 50% of the time). For me its a 25 cent a gallon difference, which is not much when my tractor holds 9 gallons and diesel is $2.70 a gallon.

When I buy off-road diesel it is then taxed after sale as sales tax. This brings the cost to within 2 cents of the road fuel. Additionally I am told it is the same sulphur content as road fuel as it would be more expensive to produce two different grades. Different localities may be different.

Marine diesel around here is the same fuel but, the price is usually about the same or higher than on road diesel. I think the main reason for this is that the small marine dealers just don't sell enough fuel to make much of a profit on it. Of course the dealers that sell to tugs, pushboats, and other comercial operators who buy hundreds to thousand of gallons at a time get a big break. i buy off road diesel and take it to my boat in 5 gallon jugs not the other way around.

that number is different for each state. Federal Road Tax is $.20/gal and TX Road Tax is $.22.2/gal. for a sum total of 42.2 cents/gal in TX other states will vary. if i buy off-road it is usually about 40 cents cheaper than the station up the street.

Homebrew BioD is a special case in TX. it is exempt from State road tax but i still have to pay Federal road Tax on fuel that I make myself. i just hope that it goes tot he road ways like it is supposed to.
