I'm wondering what people use to mark the areas that you need to dig out with a backhoe. I need to dig out an 11' square area about 12" deep, and what I'd typically do is paint lines on the ground to do something like this. But, inevitably, the lines get covered or obscured in some other way by the time I'd actually get to finishing. This usually didn't ever matter, because estimating where they were was always fine. But, in this particular task, I want to be a accurate as possible when I'm digging. I've also used string before, but that winds up getting in the way and getting ripped out.
Perhaps the answer is to use the distant marker method, where you put two stakes in the same line as the one you're digging on, but at a distance away from where you're digging and from each other, and eyeball up their alignment to keep myself straight.
