I've been recently reading some long threads about burning wood:

And there seems to be minimal mention of rocket stoves.

and other very efficient wood heaters.

Do any TBN'ers have a rocket stove they use?
Any with "outside" rocket stoves?

Our Tulikivi mass stove has a 3' long bench between the stove flue outlet (at floor level) and the chimney. The chimney is 17-18 feet tall.

These types of stoves need a good supply of outside air. Ours has a 4" pvc pipe from outside, down the inside of an exterior wall, through the slab, then under the slab to a vertical section that comes up to the floor surface right in front of the stove's air intake. Something like that or a pressure sensing make-up air vent will be needed.

We always have a good draft and fires start easily with no smoke in the house. But, our stove has a door with glass too, unlike the rocket stove. I think you would have to get something flaming lit in the rocket stove's fire area to get the draft going in the stove and not out the "sticks" hole, especially if the stove has cooled off a lot. There would normally be some residual warmth in the rocket stove masonry, that would help the draft when firing it.

I wonder also how much the air tightness of the house matters. If the chimney is the only easy way out, that will sure help.

Using the right kind of mortar and expansion room for the fire bricks, and between the fire brick and the outside shell, is important I believe.

I have a high mass oven outside that I use for bread baking. I have also read a little about rocket stoves used for cooking. If you are looking for info on heating or cooking with a high mass oven, you can check out "The Masonry Heater Association"

Most of the hype about rocket stoves seems to be just that, hype. No way you are going to go from heating your house with a couple cords of wood to heating it with a couple bundles of sticks.

Something like this might be the best use of the rocket stove design:

Prepstove Home - Prepare Your Food with Nature

For an emergency situation and maybe even camping where you could put a measured amount of wood, a measured amount of water and know that the water was properly boiled to be safe when the wood is gone would be handy. That way you could do other stuff instead of watching a pot of water ;)

I've an infinite supply of wood slabs, mainly from my sawmill and forests. I'm thinking of putting up a small building REAL CLOSE to my workshops so I could pipe heat over to them without an insurance hassle.
