Looking at a 130 Massey with the 4 cylinder Perkins made in France. Tractor is around 3000 hours, could be a bit more. Engine smokes horribly for 2 minutes, then hunkers down and only smokes moderately. When it calms down, it appears to run well, but smoky.

Right brake growls loudly and shriekly when depressed. Left brake appears OK. Cost factor and difficulty to fix?

Engine needs good diagnosis. Could be lousy rings all around. Could be one bad cylinder with poor, non-working valve seals. Any ideas?

Rubber is fair to good rears. Front rubber is new.

If engine needs doing, what kind of cost are we talking roughly speaking?

Brakes both need doing, would not just do one of them.

Rest of tractor appears good.

Guy is asking 3000. I think he is way high. In good shape with good rubber, we can think of 3000, but certainly not the way she sits.

The owner seems reasonable and will give me the phone number of his mechanic. I can talk directly to the guy who has worked on things in the past. Not sure why he left the engine as is for so long. But, I will get some answers, I hope.

Your thoughts?

thanks to all,

What color smoke: white=coolant leak (head gasket, block crack), blue=burning oil (rings, valve guides), black=fuel system problems (injection pump, injectors).
Engine rebuild kit for that Perkins would run $500-1000. I had the 4-cyl, 27 hp Hercules gas engine on my 1951 Minneapolis Moline BF tractor completely rebuilt--$800 parts, $800 labor.

I'd also check out the clutch, transmission and hydraulics thoroughly.

Good luck

Smoke coming out the exhaust is blue. Massive smoke for the first 2 minutes, then tapering off to moderate but consistent blue smoke. Once running, the engine sounds good, no rapping. Tranny is firm, no slop, easy shifting.

Would a pressure test for each cylinder be a good place to start? How about oil analysis? I once made a mistake when buying a tractor that ran well.....later I checked the oil and it was so heavy it would not come out the drain plug. Solid goo in the pan. I got by OK, luckily the crank was still OK and the bearings and rods were also OK. Very lucky.

The 130 is a real nice little unit. PTO and 3 pt work well. Rubber is good.

Thanks for your suggestions. I am speaking with the fellow's mechanic and will try to pin things down better. One brake is shot and it sounds like it is grinding and totally gone.

thanks again

Yeah, I'd pressure test the engine for sure.
Brakes: fairly easy job, especially if the rear wheels don't have to be removed to do the job.
