Massey 1655 Ford 1700 2cyl, Ford 1600 2cyl Massey 135 3cyl gas
Im ready to put the timing cover back on. When I bought this thing, the governor was not hooked up and apparently had not been for a long time. On this Perkins 3cyl gasser, how important is the governor? This tractor will be used primarily for mowing pastures, box blading on occasion. The linkage arms were just hanging there and not connected to the carb. The original carb was not there and had been replaced by a smaller size carb (the mounting holes were narrower on the replacement carb, the guy had a nut on one stud holding the carb on that side and a pair of vise grips holding the other side because the flange didnt reach the other mounting hole lol) It ran like that but obviously I will be looking for the correct size carb. As it was the governor arm coming out of the side of the timing cover was just moving around as it wanted to. Heres a few pics of the timing cover and the repacement carb and disconnected linkages. I will assemble the centrifugal governor parts inside the timing cover, and just spring load the arm until I can find the right linkage/carb. If all else fails, at least I got a free pair of vise grips! lol

I assume your 135 has a hand throttle but no foot throttle. You set the engine no-load rpm with the hand throttle and the governor keeps the engine rpm constant under load.

According to the I&T service manual, your Perkins gasser should have the governor set at low idle 725-775 rpm, high idle 2225-2275 rpm and loaded speed 2200 rpm.

I know when I broke the governor linkage on my continental gas 135 it was a real PITA to use for any thing other than moving it:eek: I would suggest that for the tasks you talk about you will find it very frustrating without a governor -- JMHO

That is correct Flusher, it does not have the foot throttle. I dont know if it originally had one or not, it seems that some things were rigged. It did run when I bought it, but I hadnt tried using it under a load with anything. It smoked so bad I wanted to get the rebuild started right away. I think all or most of the governor linkage is there, but im not so sure about the pivoting bracket it connects to is all proper. A photo of a proper gasser linkage would be helpful if anybody has one (the perkins 3cyl gasser). I guess im used to having the foot throttle on my Ford, it is handy under a load, probably will be trickier without one.

Hope this helps.

Thanks flusher, all those parts in the diagram are there. The only things I think might be missing or modified are the linkage arms going to the carb or the pivoting mechinisim. Both arms coming off of the governor lever are there but were connectecd to nothing on the other end. The last owner had only a throttle arm connected to the improper carb which was connected to the pivot mech. I guess my biggest question was how important is the function of the governor, or if one can get by without one. When I get this motor all the way back together and running I didnt want the governor to be an issue as far as it possibly over reving. Thanks! TB

Without the governor you will experience surging, stalling and very likely over- reving. You will be constantly playing with the hand throttle and since your reactions are not equal to the mechanical ones, it will likely be a complete PITA to operate the tractor. I have never seen a 135 with a foot throttle (not saying they don't exist ,just that I have never seen one). Not sure how the last owner got it to work with that carb but it would have been rough. Looks to me like everthing is there except the right carb -- the linkage for the two rods should be on a replacement carb.
