massey 145 gear selection problem

Hi , I wonder if anyone can help me with this problem. I had a job some 300 miles north of me in France that need my 1970 Massey 145 , so I loaded it on my tilt bed trailer , strapped her down on drove to the job. On arriving I rolled her of the trailer and found it very difficult to move the main gearlever , it turns out there is virtually no side to side movement in neutral and the engine wants to stall when I come of the clutch , managed to get the transfer box in S so I could tow it back on the trailer. Any ideas please

Update : having trailered her back 300 miles things have changed it appears only difficult to get into 2nd gear , all the others select and work ok
