Buying Advice Massey 1643

Hi all,

I'm tractor shopping for a 40+ hp (30+ PTO hp) compact. I would appreciate any experiences/feedback concerning the Massey 1643 or any other MF's in the 40hp range.

We have a 1635 12x12 Powershuttle, same as the 1643, except our is 3 cyl, the 1643 is 4cyl. And are totally happy with it. Starts well in the cold, lots of hydraulic flow, turns on a dime. Heat/A/C work great.

We have a cab, only thing we did was reverse the upper rear lights, so they are below the cab.

If you live in colder climates, make sure you get the block heater, as they are sold as an accessory.

I have the 1643L 43.5 hp,33.5 hp 12x12 power shuttle, platform I use it in my brush hogging buiss. I can't see owning another tractor in this class, it's a work horse and rides great compared to my old M-F 1528. the difference for me was night and day. the 1643 does all I ask of it and wants me to give it more. it pulls my 72" modern ag rotary cutter and 60" tiller like there's not much back behind me. my only fault with it is ballast, mine is heavy in the nose, I can't use filled tires on most of my customers property, so wirh loader work I have to use a ballast box. If you ask me if I'd buy it again ??? **** yes I would. I looked at a few other makes and I found that most are semi flat platforms massey is fully flat. I don't care to sit a strattle of the others.

If I was going to go with a MF I think it would be the 1648 as I believe it allows you to use the larger 130 loader.

Thanks to everyone for the feedback!

I am also considering the Kubota L3940, and a NH Boomer 40. I currently have a 1970's Deutz 3006, which I love, but she's a bit long in the tooth to fit with a loader. I will likely go with a shuttle type transmission (thanks to the Deutz, I'm not spoiled for Hydro) as I will only be doing relatively infrequent loader work, and frankly, I'm a bit of a 'retro' chick...:tractor:

Any input on these other makes is also appreciated!

The Kubota L3940 is a very good tractor and you should test drive it! I would not recommend the new NH Boomer 40 or Boomer 50 seeing that they are a LS Rio series tractor. You would be better off purchasing a LS Rio R4041 (41HP) or R4047 (47HP) (R4041H or R4047H = hydro) from a LS dealer if there is one around you. The LS tractor gives more standard offering such as two pair of standard rear remotes and etc., which are optional on the new NH Boomers; plus you might find the LS tractor to be cheaper than the NH version. If you were to look at a NH, I would test drive a Boomer 3040 or 3045 if they are still available. Of course the John Deere 4120 is also a great tractor to consider!

A Kubota L3940 and G4240 are great units. I would recommend hydrostatic regardless because it is available and you will have the best resale value on your unit with it.

I agree with eagle107 on the NH tractors. I like their larger utility units and used to like their Boomer series when they were with their old Japanese supplier.

If you have good dealers closeby you can also consider Kioti's and Mahindras. I quite like the Kioti DK40/DK45 series.
