Mf 165 multipower
Hi
I’ve recently brought a Massey 165 mulit power. From what I have found on Google the hydraulic oil filter is under the top cover,is that true does it need removed to gain access to changes the filter. I’m also unsure of the year of this Massey as the only number I can find that look like they should be serial numbers is F 520302. Is this the serial number as I have no rivet plate under the dash cluster.I also have a very slow lifting loading which has now completely stop lifting,my pto works and so did my hitch till I removed the diverter valve and I’m unsure what I have done. Any help would be appreciated
Cheers Lucas

Hi Lucas,

I have a some general Massey Ferguson knowledge and may be able to get you started with this problem. But firstly, can you provide a bit more detail about the problem? Is that a front end loader that you refer to being slow to lift? If so, was it lifting fine until you removed the diverter plate? And is that the same for three point linkage hydraulic lift - it worked until the diverter plate was removed?

With respect to the filter, I don't know for sure with the 165, but with the 135 there was an upgrade to the model that made the filter accessible without lifting the top cover. You should definitely try to get more information on this before lifting the top cover just for the filter.

Hi,
So the loader was slow lifting and then completely stopped lifting before I removed the cover. And the 3 point linkage was lifting fine before cover removal although the loader stopped working and I hadn’t tried the 3 point linkage after that. I drained the hydraulic oil which was very Watery and in inside of the housing was rusty. I removed the filter which you got from removing the pto cover on the left hand side. The filter was in a terrible state so I replaced the oil and cleaned the filter as I wanted to flush the old oil. I then started the Tractor and still found the divertor valve was still not doing anything. I removed the line off it that goes to the loader and ran the tractor and no oil came out it feels like the handle isn’t doing anything. Has the lift pump maybe stopped working ?
Any help greatly appreciated
Cheers Lucas

Hi,

I had a very similar experience with my MF35. Mine had been sitting for a number of years with heavily water contaminated oil in the gearbox. I changed it and the TPL worked fine for 18 months lifting up to 600kg/1300lb.

I then bought a front end loader and fitted it. The FEL lifted once and then stopped and never lifted again. The TPL also now only lifted weakly and could be forced back down against the lifting hydraulics.

After messing around a while I lifted the top cover of the gearbox and removed the hydraulic pump. I found one valve assembly blown out of its block. The retaining circlip was a rusted residue in its slot and the circlips on the other cylinders were similar. These clips retaining the valve assemblies are set in recesses on the top of the pump and water pools in the recesses and corrodes them. In my situation, the high pressure created by the diverter valve being between it's two positions blew a valve assembly out. One cylinder damaged allows all of the pumps output to leak so no pressure at all is developed.

Rebuilding the pump is pretty easy, though replacing the whole pump is probably a good idea if it's water damage. I would recommend lifting your pump out before ordering any parts as I believe there were 3 pump types in MF65. The top covers can be quite heavy and need replacing gently so as to not damage the gasket. You'll want a second person or a hoist of some description. I used a chain block/tackle on the roll over bar. I'm not a mechanic and I managed this job myself.

Regards the oil change, have a read of my post about this called "Water in gearbox oil cautionary tale" to avoid problems I experienced.

Let me know if I can help further.
