called about a 1976 mf 245 today. looked brand new in the pic. older gentleman told me tractor's entire history. everything works. 1600 hrs. $7250 tractor only. said he was firm. is that price high, or am i missing something? i'm thinking $5k-$6k at the most.

If the tires are original, i would thik around 6k at the most. Newer tires with no surface cracking then maybe 7. Check the 3ph balls for slack. With only 1600 hrs they shouldnt have much slack in them. Also look at the hole in the drawbar. It should still be round not oval if the hrs are true.

Slightly high but if it is diesel, if everything works, good tires and you can trust the seller's word you will have a nice tractor. You could not get a new 45 HP tractor that will last as long and be of the quality for that price. Massey 45 HPs are the kings of brush hogs. Almost all engine power transfers to the PTO. You have to be willing to accept old school and you should have a block heater if you live in a cold climate, they do not have glow plugs.

Compared to a new tractor that is about 50% of the cost...

it is a diesel and a strong bush hogging tractor is what i want. 2 stage clutch and power steering. it's @ 3 hour drive, so i hate to ride that far just to look. but if it's as good as guy says and looks, i hate not to. he says he's firm on price. it's on atlanta craiglist,farm and garden(cumming,ga) if someone wants to take a look.

This one? If it as nice as it looks, you would have a good deal there. However, it is missing a few bolts on the rear wheels which is not consistent with the looks of the tractor. Little things bug the paranoid part of me unless I know the reason. If the service history shows well and if the engine has not been torn into, it could be a very good tractor.

see, i didn't even notice. appears to be 3 or 4 missing on one wheel. little things annoy me also, especially when a premium price is on it. missing bolts could be as simple as, 'i lost a few over the years and never replaced' or the more likely,' threads are jacked up and i can't get them back in'.
