Massey Ferguson 35, 1964
Hi all.
I've just started renovationg a front loader for my Massey Ferguson 35 (1964).

The rams are quite corroded with patches of rust along their length. Can I just remove the rust with emery?

Should I attempt to recon the struts, or fit them and see how they go? I have today got them moving in and out fairly happily which is a start.
There's no numbers or identification on them that I can see anywhere, so I would have no idea of spare part numbers at this point. They do need end seals for sure.

Cheers,
Jim

Do what you can to clean them up, and use them until you can not stand the leaks anymore , if any.

Then rebuild or replace with similar cyl.

Check your fluid, filters, and screens if any.

Install a hyd gage and test the pressure. A good system should have about 2800 psi.

Hydraulics:
Capacity: 8 gal [30.3 L]
Pressure: 2800 psi [193.1 bar]
Pump flow: 3.5 gpm [13.2 lpm]

Cheers JJ.
I'll stick them on and see how they go before looking at a rebuild. They at least move now. I don't see any way of dismantling them at the moment which is odd...

I finally got the front loader onto the MF35 this evening (in the snow I might add) and she moves! Thanks all those who gave me help in the renovation.
Hardly any leakage from the rams which is a relief, but the hydralic pump does grumble a bit on the lift.
Here are a couple of photos. IMG_2801.JPGIMG_2802.JPG
Now all Ive got do do is find out how to store it off the tractor, to avoid having to lift the thing into position on my own - its HEAVY! Any ideas?

Hi mark. Yup I'm still here :)

I don't need anything, but thanks for asking!
I just finished rebuilding my MF 35-12 loader; I made all new mounting bushings, bored the ends of the cylinders and put in bronze bushings, and replaced the main pivot blocks. I invented a "backyard machinist" method for boring out the mount holes so they're all in a line.

But I only just realized how old it is; and I had to find your picture to confirm it. My tractor is only 30 years old [SAME Explorer 85HP 4WD], and came with the MF loader grafted onto it.

Mine has double acting cylinders, and one for dumping the bucket that looks like it was made as a bolt on extra. The ID plate says Massey-Ferguson Spain, but I guess it was made in the US. The cylinders and bolts are in inches.
The 4 bolts that hold the forward brace to the tower are 1/2" fine on one side, and on the other are all bored out to 5/8" course. The thing is, practically no one has inch size taps and bolts here in Europe.

My wife loves your tractor, she says it looks like a crab and wants me to make mine look like tat too.

I've been keeping a web page with detailed pictures and all;
