Massey 65 mK2 Weak Hydraulics

Hi All,

I am a bit stuck on what is causing the weak hydraulics on my 65. The symptom is that the hydraulics will just about raise a tool like a drum mower of moderate weight if i raise the control lever very slowly but will suddenly stop raising and gradually lower the implement once a certain "limit" has been reached. If i try to raise the implement quickly, it will not respond at all. If i try lifting a very heavy implement like a rotaharrow, the 3 point will not even lift it at all whereas i have seen other 65's running rotaharrows.

To try to fix this so far i have replaced all the joints, piston rings and o-rings on the hydraulic pump and the main lift cylinder.

Could it be the pressure relief valve blowing too early or the incorrect one fitted?

try changing the fluid and cleaning the screen

New fluid and filter was installed when pump renovated.

Hi, yes i followed advice on the air by lifting the 3 point up and down several times with little weight on it. The symptoms are the same before and after i did the work on the pump and ram. Thanks

Hi Guys,

I discovered what the problem was with my lack of hydraulic power. I changed the clutch because i had a slipping PTO and couldn't run my baler and it turned out the PTO clutch plate was in pieces. The clutch was simply not turning the hydraulic pump consistently. After restarting and adjusting the PTO clutch spacing, i have full pressure and i can run PTO driven tools really well.

This might be useful for future users of this forum because no one i talked to (including very experienced mechanics) thought of this.

G'day Oily glad you got your prob sorted out it is indeed a strange one however you say no one thought of this did you tell any one your pto was not working properly??

I am not having a go but some times it helps to have all parts of the story no matter how irrelevant it seems and I would not have thought of it and I have been working on these machines for 27+ years, so to anyone out there no matter how minor or unrelated it seems let us know for as oily found out sometimes you can't see the forest for the trees.

Howdy, Have to agree with Banjodunn. Some where: U are our eyes, ears and nose....tell everything accurately, with ALL the "footnotes"
Was following and never mentioned that "fact" about ur PTO.

This poster had several threads detailing the issues he was dealing with. The first was his introduction and include his problems with the hydraulics and PTO back on page 5, the second being the water pump back, another with the differential lock ,another with the correct clutch kit, and included with these was just general maintenance with overheating and general maintenance of the cooling system. Unfortunately the weak hydraulics and the pto were related and no one connected the two. Personally multiple threads focus on one issue and are less confusing in the end. He did a good job dealing with multiple problems. That my two cents on this thread.
P.S. Actually his first post was asking where he could hook a pressure gage to check hydraulic system pressure.
