Massey Ferguson 165 4 cyl Diesel
I need to remove and replace the fuel injector pump on my MS 165. How do I find TDC when installing the new pump. I found TDC on the flywheel, but no corrersponding mark on the block to line it up with. I cant locate any marks when I remove the front cover where the oil tube is and no marks when I remove the inspection cover on the injection pump itself.

This is easy but a bit complicated. You take and prop open one of the valves on cylinder number one. Pry one valve is open and then I usually just put a socket under the rocker arm. Very carefully bar the engine over until the piston touches the valve. Pick a spot or make a pointer and mark the flywheel at that point. Carefully rotate the engine in the opposite direction until the piston again touches the valve. Again mark the flywheel using the original pointer that you picked out. Exactly between those two marks on your flywheel is TDC. Now rotate the engine back a bit and take out the socket from under the rocker before anything gets bent. Do some measuring and make a permanent mark at TDC either using the present mark on the flywheel or make a new one of your own. Now for the math. Your injection pump isn't installed at TDC. It's installed a certain number of degrees before TDC. Any injection pump rebuild shop should be able to tell you the degrees. Take a soft measuring tape like your wife uses for sewing (this works better in metric than inches) and measure the circumference of the flywheel. Divide the circumference by 360 and then multiply the result by the number of degrees of advance that the rebuild shop gave you. Use that number to measure from TDC with the tape to again mark your flywheel at BEFORE TDC to make a timing mark for the injection pump. Now there should be some way to either lock up the injection pump at this position or there should be two marks that line up very close under the injection pump inspection cover. If not you can carefully make some marks with a small chisel. I'll be happy to answer any questions that you have or someone else might come up with a better idea but if none of this makes any sense to you then you should get a mechanic to do the job for you.
