Hi folks,

I went to replace some parts on the steering of my MF275. The parts had not been replaced in the last 10 years and the steering had become vert difficult to turn especially around the yard. I certainly wasn’t greasing it often enough either. Anyway I removed the old parts and went at fitting the below components(all the items highlighted in yellow. I removed the main pin by hitting underneath and out the tip as I knew this was a tapered pin. However the installation of the new parts is where I found the real challenge. The main pin (part #20) I drove with a lot of effort with a lump hammer into the existing steering arm (part #34) which was supported underneath. Then I followed with part #19 which needed even more force to get into down onto the accepting splines. Then the greatest of all challenges was fitting part #15, to get it started onto the pin was tricky and it took full blows of a sledge hammer to drive it home, and I had smeared a little grease on both beforehand. Even so I still didn’t get it fully down so that I could fit the circlip but I think its tight enough that I wont have to worry about it coming up off the pin!!! While doing all this I forgot to fit the tapered pin (part #17). I had assumed that I could screw this down from the top after but that does not seem possible now -(discovered that afterwards)…….Are these parts such a pain in the **s to fit or did I get parts of poorer quality(tolerances too tight) or was my sequence or methods incorrect?

Also what options do I have with regards the tapered pin ? I cant stand the thought of having to remove the non-splined top arm again, and don’t know how it would even be possible!!!

Any thoughts or advise would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome! All the parts you installed should have gone on without beating them on as the first two get tightened with clamping bolts. The last part needs close tolerance BUT it should pivot without a lot of force.
Something is wrong with the pin.??..?

I know the old pin, 20, is worn, but can you measure the diameter of the old and new pins where the old one may have original machining that isn’t worn?

These things aren't supposed to be hammered in,that's what a press is for. When you hit a press fit or slip fit assembly it swells, not much but it swells and the next blow swells it farther until there's no clearance to go farther. It's usually a good idea cleaning old part that mates with new part with solvent and polish old and new parts with 1k or finer grit wet/dry paper with lite oil. Heat,a press and lots of patience might get them back apart but you might be better off finding a good complete used unit. If a good one can't be found you might have to buy more new parts plus used parts to replace those which can't have pins extracted.
