About how much power should be expected from a 1975 MF 285 Diesel?

Back before I starting playing with old Oliver tractors I really looked at a lot of Massey Fergusons and liked them a lot. The 285 started production in the mid 70's so yours is either the first or second year of production. The hp at the drawbar is in upper 60's or maybe even 70. I believe the PTO hp is just above 80 hp. The engine should be a 4 cyl Perkins. Gross weight is nearly 4 tons with 4 wheel drive version, slightly less if you have a 2wd.

I wish I knew as much about the new MFs as I do about some of the old ones!!!

It has a 318 cid 4 cylinder Perkins and is rated at 85 PTO horsepower, one of Masseys best. It was well suited for orhard vineyard work and still alot in use, on the west coast anyway.
The English version had a 248 cid Perkins, there are a few gray markets around, but not many. Does it have a 8 speed or a Multi-Power transmission?

I owned a 285 for a couple of years in the mid 70's. Plenty of power for 4 plows on stiff soil, but we had a lot of problems with the front end. We had a very aggressive MF dealer in the area, and I remember going in his shop and seeing several 285's with the front end being worked on.
