Massey Ferguson fuel lift pump issue

I have a MF 431 with a perkins engine that the fuel lift pump is not making proper connection. The purple wire to the pump is hot but I dont know how its making a ground back throught the ignition (if thats what its supposed to do) I can jumper the pins on the pump straight to the battery and the pump works fine. Ive checked all the fuses and looked for any loose connections but cant get the lift pump to actuate normally. I use to hear it when I turn the key on but not now. Tractor will run at idle but misses and smokes when I try to work it.
