I bought my tractor in July this year and it has about 135 hours on the meter now. It’s a gear tractor with manual shuttle, and I’ve worked it pretty hard at times. Probably the heaviest was pulling a subsoiler about eighteen inches deep through this place during dry weather which resulted in breaking the drawbar out of the subsoiler and after replacing that, breaking off the linkage for the top link. That hasn’t been repaired yet! Sometime in mid-December I was moving some downed trees with the pallet forks and noticed that the clutch was slipping when I reversed. This was light work, and the slippage was with no load other than going from a stopped position to reverse. I immediately stopped what I was doing and drove to my shop where I tried to adjust the clutch. I was able to adjust it to a point where it didn’t slip, but there was no free play and the pedal was about four inches lower than normal. I loaded the tractor up and headed out to the dealership that afternoon.
The salesman that I bought it from wasn’t in, but when I took it in the service manager said something to the effect "they'll never warranty a clutch!" and he had the attitude that I had done it somehow. That's probably because I bought a drawbar last month from him that I broke the first day and asked for a replacement. I got pretty angry and just tried to stay away from him to keep from doing or saying something that would really screw up the environment. The mechanic knew I was mad and I think he told my salesman what was said and how. He (the mechanic) was limited in what he could say because he has to make a living, but his attitude was that it was probably a bad part and would be covered by the warranty. Anyhow, the salesman was there on a later trip to see about what was going on and he assured me they would cover the clutch. In spite of his assurances I’ve had a nagging doubt in my mind about this situation since. Because of this attitude I began to regret ever dealing with those people. I’m fifty-six years old and have been operating equipment since I was fourteen years old and have never burned out a clutch on anything. I have WORN out a few but in a reasonable time frame. I’ve been tempted to post to the group about my concerns, but didn’t feel that I could be fair in the situation without knowing the outcome so I just waited.
It’s been about a week today since I last stopped by to check, so while I was out getting some English pea seeds I dropped in. The salesman was there and said that they were waiting on parts. He also said that the Massey rep was there and told them to replace the clutch, throw-out bearing, and pressure plate when he was there. MADE ME FEEL GOOD.
While I was there we looked at the old parts, because I couldn’t understand what might have caused the failure. The clutch was hardly worn and there was very little fiber inside the bell housing. The pressure plate was slightly discolored in several areas as if from heat. All I can figure is that the pressure plate was faulty.
The bottom line is I’m not in a hurry because it’s too wet to plow, and I’ve reinforced the lesson to ignore the nay-sayers in this world. My salesman and MF has kept another customer satisfied.
