Massey Harris 50
Hello,
This is my first post on this forum. I have a MH 50 with the continental gas engine. A prior owner replaced the original generator set up with an alternator. I am trying to restore the tractor and get everything working, the tractormeter (tachometer) was disconnected when I bought the tractor. I cannot find where to hook up the cable. Some research has indicated that the original generator had a connection where the cable was installed. I have the original parts manual for the tractor and the diagram and description of the generator shows no such connection. Does anybody have any information on this subject?
Thanks

On a Perkins diesel there's a fitting on the end of the camshaft, I think. On my MF35 I only found it once, to put on the new cable. It's hard to see in there.

Though he stated Continental and gas.

My old MH50 (excellent combination of power and size) had a tach cable driven off the gen rear housing as I recall. I don't think you have the right drawing yet.

Sorry, mine was 4 cyl. Gas Continental.

It does show the generator connection in the AGCOPartsbook: AGCO Parts Books

You'll need to enter as a guest, select your model, then scroll down in the menu and find upper instrument panels, and instruments.

Here is a dirct link to the page, but don't think it will work. AGCO AgcoPartsBooks.com - Error

Thanks for all of your input, yes it is a four cylinder Continental gas engine. The prior owner had converted the generator to an alternator set up. There is absolutely no where else on this engine that has the connection so that must be it. I believe that you can get alternator's with a tach connection?
Thanks again.

I went to the AGCO site and looked up the page. It is exactly what I have in the original parts manual that I got with the tractor. For the life of me I cannot see on the generator page anything relating to a tach connection. On the instrument page it has the tractormeter, the cable and the drive connection but it is not showing where the drive connection goes.

Drive connection is mounted on the back of the generator. Look at parts 45 through 52 in the instrument panel page.

I don't know that I've ever seen a tach drive on the back of an alternator, but very well could be. The problem I would see, would be if the pulley's were the same diameter on the genny, and alternator. If not, then the meter would not be accurate.

Depending on how particular you are, and are looking for accurate RPM readings, maybe go with an electric tach. If you have an extra hole in the dash, an electric hour meter could go there, or mount down on the side somewhere out of the way.
