Matching up the \'right\' used tiller with L-2800

I'm looking for a used tiller for my L-2800 (gear driven - NOT HST). Is there any specific concern(s) for what type of tiller I get. I believe the dealer I got the tractor from said they don't rent tillers often because of problems matching up tillers with the PTO HP of various tractors. That got me wondering if I can just pick one up out in town without researching it first, so here I am.

So, are there any concerns or things to look for? Is there a tiller "rating" that makes it easy to see how many PTO HP it will support without breaking into pieces? Is there already a known thread about this I couldn't find when I searched the archives? Hey, at least I don't have the full 20 questions (yet). /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Get a tiller that is rated within the PTO HP of your L2800, which is 24HP for the gear drive. I wouldn't go over 60 inches.

Also get one that has a slip clutch to prevent damage to the tractor PTO if you hit somthing like a rock or stump. Try to avoid doing that though.

The actual HP that will be needed depends on your soil and the size of the tiller. If you have tough soil stay on the smaller side. If you have loose sandy soil like I do, you could go a bit larger.

Nah, my soil is like a rock - nice, hard Southern California decomposed granite and some clay. My challenge is that it's very dry most of the year, but I can correct for that. Once I get it tilled up I expect it to be nice and easy from year to year (for a garden). Good recommendation on the slip-clutch. I forgot about that option.

Thanks!

Do it after a rain. If it is too hard you may find the tiller bouncing off it. Maybe you can find someone to plow it once with a bigger machine if that happens. After that you should be fine.
