We are considering a new tractor in the future ( next few months to a year) and we were very interested in the Max 28 as the power is close to what we need (could be a bit higher) and dimensions fit what we do (vegetable gardening) well for row spacing, for cultivating etc. However, I saw on a discussion on this site that the tractor does not come with a live PTO in the shuttle shift version and the HST version has less HP.
I need 30-35 hp to pull a bed former and plastic mulch layer but was hoping the 28 hp with the 4WD would be enough to compensate for the few less hp of the tractor. What are your thoughts on that? The tire spacing should let me lay down one row of 4' mulch and turn around and run the same tire track back laying the next row and only loose about 16 inches between beds.
The other part of our vegetable growing is that anything we do not put in plastic and just row crop like beans, lettuce etc., we do in 30 inch row spacing and this tractor would be suited for that spacing or real close to that with the Ag tire option. I wish it was just a hair narrower but, it doesn't look like there is any adjust-ability in these spacings, is there?
I was looking at several other models in the Mahindra lineup but didn't see anything else slightly larger with the same wheel spacing. Is there something any of you are aware of? The lack of live pto would not be an issue most of the time but, I am sure it would be much nicer to have live pto rather than not for running the tiller etc. Actually I was shocked to see any modern tractor being manufactured without it in this day and time. Would this model even handle a six foot tiller?
