Max28XL, Not Turning over when Key is turned to start.

Hello,

I drove my Max, dragged the road with the Grader/Scrapper, all was well.

Took my two buckets of trash to end of the 1/4 mile drive, all was well.

Shut off the Max, let it set overnight.

Went to start the Max the next day and nothing !

Gauges worked, flashes/directionals worked, but headlights didn't work !

I charged the battery, with no affect !

I checked out all the fuses in the Main Panel under the Hood, next to the Firewall, all checked good with the Multimeter, 0 resistance.

I then by-passed the Clutch Safety Switch by connecting the two leads together (was having a problem there anyway), still nothing.

So... here I sit, broken hearted... you know the rest; what do I do next.

Is there another Circuit Panel, Safety Switch, or does the starter have a fuse on the engagement wires ?

PLEASE, if anyone can help, post !

Sounds like issue with battery cables. Check the connections to the post and also the ground to the frame. The battery cables can glaze over on the inside preventing good connection to the battery post. Remove and use wire brush or real course sandpaper inside the clamps. Easy to test with jumper cables.

Thx for the reply but I have power at the Dash and with the rear lighting.
So I'm thinking the battery cables should be working ok.

The battery is about six months old with new cables, Connector pads and corrosion paste !

I’m not a max guy but I recall their being a bigger hidden fuse or relay that would produce those symptoms. Search for the 26 max and 28 max starting issues to see where it’s at.

When mine did that I had bumped the PTO lever with my jacket. I’ve also heard of seats getting cold enough you had to put your knee into it to trip the seat safety.

Look closely at the ground connections. I think the head lights and safety (starter) relay share the same ground.

Thanks, interesting that those two circuits share a ground.

I replaced the battery about six months ago and cleaned up all the connections in the battery area.

I will check it out and let the site know what I have come up with.

I was reading the posting, (link by LouNY), about the Max26 having similar problems, it mentioned about a safety Switch on the PTO Lever. Thx U !

My Max28 got parked and wouldn't start the next day, almost similar !

I ran out to check the Lever and the Switch, luckily my left rear fender had been removed to replace a rear Hydraulic Line and not reinstalled yet, Wham/Bam, it was the Shift Lever it had moved just enough to disengage the safety switch. I must have hit the lever when I got off the Tractor rah other night.

THANK YOU ALL, I was about to hire someone at $110/hr now I'm back to driving the Max.

God I luv this Site, a wealth of knowledge awaits !

p.s. I'm glad it was just a small thing, but now I have to recheck and re-hook up the Safety Switches I disconnected !

I checked my battery terminals and frame and starter connections, all have a lot of dirt on them and it looks like between the connectors, thx.

Going to clean things up and use some more conductive paste.

Ya, had to be because I didn't use the PTO; I'm thinking when cleaning up the Tractor, I am going to thinking on a lock of the Off-Position for that lever.
It took me over two hours to review the safety switches I knew about, crawling under the Tractor and check the wiring in and around the battery and starter; I almost took apart the dash to check out the ignition.

I did find a hydraulic Hose that was hanging, the HD Ty-Wraps weren't so HD, they had broke and the Hose was hanging waiting for a hook up, that was save two ! I found a couple of Bolt holes, not sure there were bolt in them at one time but mating part looks like it should have been supported, and save three, maybe !

I need to review the whole tractor, clean it up with a pressure washer, and then grease her up, add some extra ty-wraps for the hoses and wiring under the tractor.

The tractors arrive in a crate with no final drives, tires or FEL. The dealer puts these parts on. I found some lose bolts too- I don’t think my dealer has a torque wrench. As soon as I torqued them they stopped backing out. Same with hydraulic hoses. The machine probably doesn’t have soft hoses unless the FEL and or BH is added.

With safety switches everywhere.... just think how much stuff gets wiggled and moved when someone's father [ or maybe even husband ] is not around. Along with the required homemade motor noises.

And my granddaughter loves the tractor and steers it while I work the peddles.

She will be driving it soon by herself.

I tell her not to move any of the levers but we all know how far that goes !
