Thanks Dennis for your thoughts.
And why is it hardly anyone says "Have a Happy Independence Day'...everyone says "have a happy 4th"? NO ONE says " have a happy 25th" for Christmas...or any other holiday. I bet most young kids have no idea why we celebrate the 4th.

Most times I have no idea why we celebrate the 4th, other than for something that no longer seems to be alive in most places. I get harrassed less when driving around Mexico than I do here in the US, not to mention the horrible taxes, intrusive government, burdonsome regulation of everything, etc... Publicly post & advocate something like the Declaration of Independence today (you won't need to change many words) and see how long it takes before you get a knock or night raid.

What gets me down the most is that most people seem to like it this way. At least in some other countries they know that their government is up to no good and often have a good old-fashioned stone throwing and effigy burning protest.

My original intent on this thread was to point out that 4 July is Independence Day. The day set aside to recognize and celebrate the document, THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE. A statement by the founding fathers of this country that was directed towards the abuses of the tyranical government that was abusing them.

PLEASE LOOK AT THE DOCUMENT:

The Declaration of Independence

It begins with the famous LIFE, LIBERTY, and PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS...........this is so abused by the "rights" folks.

NOW...........scan down to all of the "HE HAS" statements.......the "HE" being the King of England. PLEASE compare these with what is happening to our country today: it's leadership, the citizenry, and what Liberty and HONOR mean to YOU.

I am just glad my kids still say "the pledge of allegiance" in the classroom. This is followed by the song "god bless america." From what I hear this is kind of rare anymore.

A friend of mine recommended "The Crossing", about Washington's crossing of the Delaware to attack the Hessians at Trenton. It was a made for TV with Jeff Daniels as Washington (it's on youtube, if you don't mind low-res). It was a good 90 minutes, and puts Independence in perspective. It was anything but a done deal at the time, yet we naturally take it for granted today.

I travel a lot; I believe there is still a big difference between how most of the world is actually run, and the United States. I am usually glad to go, but always glad to come back. It can always be better but I'll leave that for another place and time.
