Friend of mine is looking at a B1750 W FEL HYDRO, MFWD, 2 spd PTO, in pretty good overall shape. Did a quick tractor Blue book estimate at the local tractor dealer, and it looks like the price is about right. My problem with the unit is that the tires are worn clean down to nothing, and showing 1550 on the hourmeter. Also a sticker on the side of the hood that reads" Flat tires are the responibility of the customer" I think that the top bearing is shot on the top the steering column also, which indicates maybe more hours than are shoeing on the hourmeter. Is being offered with a 4" brush hog, 4 " Gannon box w rippers, and rototiller, about 3'6", didn't catch the make. Package deal is $8,000. Actually sounds pretty fair to me. How about you ?

As a rule, I wouldn't consider buying a rental anything.

There are definitely pros and cons of buying off a rental yard. We bought a Busy Beever Chipper (20 HP) off a rental yard, 14 years ago and haven't had any major problems with it.

When some rental yards "retire" their fleet, they should really sell them for parts.

Anyway, the pros seem to be the units get regular maintenance and inspections when they are turned in, at least from what I have seen from a local yard. The cons are the equipment has seen a lot of operators and no two people operate it the same, but then consider it has regular inspections and HOPEFULLY the rental yard wouldn't rent out crap, then they get the reputation for renting crap equipment.

If your friend is serious about the deal, ask the rental yard and they might be able to replace the bearings, tires, and do a full oil/filter change of the hydro and engine included in the asking price and he might have a tractor.

Good Luck!!

My concern with rental stuff is that people don't treat it well for several reasons. First, they often don't know what they are doing (BTDT). Second, it isn't theirs so they don't care how they treat it. Another concern is the rental company letting it go. Unless it is technologically outdated to the point where no one wants to rent it, then I would suspect that they are unloading it due to increasing repair and maintenance costs.

But still, if you have the mechanical know how to look it over and make sure there is nothing major wrong with it, then it might be a good deal.

I am with N80 on this one. I would not buy rental unit. I have rented cars, 30hp bobcat TLB, and a walk behind bushog. To be totally honest, I treated them like rentals. People sometimes rent, because they do not want to punish their own equipment. That's why we have the expression "Don't worry, it's a rental".:)

Most people will do (or at least try...really hard) to do things they would never do with something they own. I've seen rental tractors continuously rammed into stumps to try and dislodge them...and I mean RAM, full speed into these things. Stresses like this are often not visible but the damage will be there. Some gems might be had but overall you're taking a big chance. I agree stay away.

What strikes me is that the tires are bald at 1550 hours. One of my tractors has 1300 hours and I have replaced the front tires but the rear are no where near worn out. I just got to wonder if those are accurate readings on the hour meter.

I agree w/N80...usally those that rent don't show much mercy, and time is money.
Maybe pvt. sale or dealer he'd have better luck down the road.

Nobody ever washes a rental car. I might buy a rental, but only if the price is discounted enough to account for the many possible unknowns.

I personally would stay away. I have looked at some of the rental rigs and they are pretty much beat up. I just don't think there is a good price for a rental unit.

People just don't care about the tractor. They will ram it into things with the loader and just beat it up.

8K is a lot of money to spend to have nothing but problems.
