After all the threads posted about the hoods melting, I was wondering if the 1000 and 1500 series Cubs have the same problem? I have gotten the impression that it is just on the 2500 series by all the postings i have read.

Good point. The vertical shaft engines on the 1000's don't have this type of heat issue. The muffler is mounted out the front, below the frame where the heat can't collect under the hood.

I guess that people aren't removing the muffler heat shield are they??

I haven't had a meltimg problem with mine....Although I did have my hood replaced because of cracking.....

Looks like I finally was "approved" for comment. '07 2554. Didn't have 1 hour on it and the hood fell off. Super dealer I bought from, took a hood from another brand new unit, and I waited as they replaced it. Like my old dad, jack of all trades and master of none. :D It was obvious they overtorqued those hood bolts at the factory. I'm working on 18 hours now, and feel confident at this point I made the right decision to go Cub. There's nothing wrong with Murray, IMHO, however, they are just not made to cut as much as I'm cutting, {2 acres}. Yepper, I was none too pleased when that hood fell off, and my $900 Murray hood never did. ???? But the Cub did take my 3.5-5 hour job, depending on grass height, down to 1.5-2.0 hours, and much more confortable, albeit a little hungry for fuel. Hood is not melting, and as far as clutch heat, there is also a head shield over the clutch under the large heat deflector. No gripes at all, but will install a headlight switch when the warranty expires. Thanks for your time. Church Point, La. ps, smart deck wash is a mamby pamby messy joke, again, just my opinion. Used it once. no more

Other than Murray is no longer in business, a victim of the Chinese being able to make the types of products Murray made much cheaper than they could.

You get a pretty decent machine for the buck with Cub Cadet. They are not quite the Toyota-like quality of Deere and Kubota, but they don't have those price tags either.

yeah, but Old man Murray is spinning in his grave. He started out forming running boards and fenders for Model T's then artillery shells in both wars. I got three yrs out of a 900 dollar rider cutting 2 acres once or twice a week, and after 3 yrs, still got 300 bucks on a trade in. Never had to work on it once, but just too small and slow. besides you can't compare the two.
