Sorry Crowbar, I can't let this go. I keep thinking about how I felt shortly after my grandfather passed, and I feel for you. I thought I was tuff and handled it fine, but it was hard on me. A couple of years later the plastic cover for the air breather broke on the old tractor. Along with the tractor came an old metal 5 gallon bucket and a little wooden box full of stuff. When I opened them up, right on top was a brand new plastic cover for the air breather all wrapped up in an 80's newspaper. It just as well of had a note in it saying, "I knew you would need this, Love Grandpa". That was it. I sat right down in the barn and had a good cry.
Over the years, anytime I needed something it was in the bucket or box. Wheel bearings for the tandem disc. Gasket for the oil filter. A complete set of bearings and seals for the wheat drill disc.
This year was the first time I tried using the old breaking plow. I hit a rock and broke it right in half. After dragging it all back to the barn I cleaned it up and got ready to weld it back up. I could see this had happened before. Since my grandfather taught me how to weld, I can easily identify HIS welding. HIS welds never break. The old plow broke right where he stopped welding and the old factory welds gave way. Needless to say I welded up the other half, and now you can't really tell HIS welds from mine. The point is, even 20 years later, when I looked at that old welding and saw where it broke, I sat there in the dirt and had another good cry.
Although I cherish my memories, I still miss him A LOT.
