MF 1035 - 4WD Problem

Hey everyone,

We just bought a 1986 Massey Ferguson 1035. Love it so far! However, the 4WD in it seems to be faulty. Once it is engaged (and under load) the 4WD rotates the front tires for about an 1/8th of a revolution and then it stops working and leaves the rear to do the rest of the job, until I reverse and put it in forward again. If I rev the you know what out of it, the 4WD will eventually pull the tractor through but I can tell it's hurting her (front end starts hopping around). It does the same in reverse. I'm thinking a gear in the front differential is the problem (a few missing teeth on a crown gear?). I am new to the tractor world so hopefully you guys can help us out.

Does it grind or make any kind of noise?

I wouldn't say it grinds, but it does make sort of a hard 'clicking' noise when the wheels are trying to rotate. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

The first thing that I would do is check the front drive shaft. The attaching pin may be sheared. It may have a cover over it that would need to be removed or slid together so that you can see it.

I would think that Jerrys' advice on checking the shearpin on the drive axle going into the front differential is a good place to start!

I have a 1986 MF 1040 for the past 2 1/2 years and it has been a good tractor to me. Although the original owner, actually the only other owner did not maintain the tractor properly. When I got the tractor I changed out all the filters and fluids. You have three resevoirs in your front axle. The center, and a reduction unit on each side. When draining out one of my reduction units, it had quite a bit of water. I would also check all these resevoirs and replace with clean gear lube.

ps Prior to engagement or disengagement of the fwd tractor movement must be stopped and clutch fully depressed!
